Thought I'd revisit the Ditchling Devil today.

My legs are shot today. I feel absolutely rotten at the minute.

Was it me, or has there been a vicious south westerly wind today? It seemed to be at my back from Chiddigfold onwards, but the damage had been done at that point I guess.

I jest not, from Richmond back to home, I got overtaken by a girl with stabilisers I had that little left to give. 😳

Is the Greenwich Mean Climb a new one? Looks tough...

Greenwich Mean Climb has been going a couple of years I think. Did it year before last and found it very very hard. It's pretty similar to the route of the Shark audax with an extra 100k of brutal climbing thrown in after Seaford.

Being ACH it will be very well run. Still not doing it again...

Does anyone have suggestions for a good 400km DIY that's vaguely accessible from London? Sufficient time has passed from my LEL failure to consider riding a bike again and I'm a 400 short of an SR for this year. Preferably not Essex/Suffolk (ruling out doing Flatlands for that reason) because I find the scenery a bit monotonous plus I am never cycling anywhere near Epping Forest in daytime again.
Thinking London-Wales-London might be best option. Would prefer nothing too AAA because I'm horribly slow on hills.

You could diy London Wales London. I'd do it clock wise rather than in the official direction if it were me, as the roads near the end were very laney and near the beginning more A/B-y.

Other than than, the national 400 from last year was super nice - you can get to the start-ish (Matlock vs. Biggin) (or rather have the diy route start from there) by train for midnight and start with a bit of night riding... Again road may need some adaptation (the first bit round the Peak District was amazing, would be a shame to ride that in the dark)

Edit: should have read until the end, you're suggesting LWL already.

I did national 400 last year, that's a great route which I'd love to do again. But family means I should probably restrict myself to the least time away possible. It would be a shame to do the first bit in the dark.
That's good to know about LWL. I suppose I could start that at night.

Funnily enough the Shark was my fastest ever 200k audax despite the fact that I've never once managed to ride up Hogtrough Hill on the last leg into London.

I'm going to try the Grenwich Mean Climb again this year. DNF two years ago (but did meet @emilia briefly), DNS last year (new baby). After BCM and LEL it all seems much more achievable but doubltless I'll go out too hard or otherwise sabotage myself in a new and entertaining way.

Incidentally, I am signed up for this and will be riding down from Sunbury. Will probably go via Old Woking and West Clandon because I know the route - he says 🤗 -But if anyone is wanting a riding partner, I could head via Leatherhead I guess.
Gonna be running the trusty 65", with a 62" bailout I think, so slow and steady and all that.

Luke Allen was the first to show up back at Dolgellau (400km) at 8pm this year and I got him some food. Then Ritchie quite proudly explained the route and what a mostly car free 200 km A road blast to the finish he would have. I was slightly jealous.
