Dunno if people are being wilfully ignorant but it's used as pejorative because there are thousands upon thousands of insufferable cunts who self identify as social justice activists and who do in fact, nothing but virtue signal. The same as misandrists who reckon they are feminists and sully the whole movement by association. Often they are the loudest section of said movements and are often people's first contact which then puts them off and causes them to write off thw whole thing, very shallow and blinkered thinking but not entirely unfounded
