  • The small hole near the Roller fork dropout is a vent hole it's not stated as a rack/guard mount hence why it's not threaded.
You will need a guard that P-clips to the fork legs (many to choose from)
Or something like these 2. However these are designed to slip over a 6mm Q/R axle end so will need drilling out if using 9/10mm bolt on track wheels.

Surly Roller fork details, no guard mounts.

Suppose you could thread the vent hole, position and bolt head size might not play well with some hubs though.
And certain Cervelo riders may take an interest in upcoming dentistry :)

  • Just poked my hole.
Appears an M4 tap will just catch, may leave shallow threads, going up to M5 would be better.
    That's on a 2017 spec fork.
    :)

  • Sorry to spam but I'm looking for a 56cm Steamroller. Let me know if you're looking to sell.

  • As tempted as I am to tap the hole to m5 I also want to fit my wald basket.
Have I seen a pair of axiom runners with double eyelets somewhere(looked like Mickey Mouse) or did I imagine it?

Also, cheapish calipers of choice to clear mudguards and larger tyres? Ideally I'd use the compass Bon jons(35c) I have in the cupboard but surly info says 32 max with mudguards :/
Just ordered a pair of v-sprints for it.

  • chatter and pics on calipers on page 75.

Dia compe center pull seemed to offer best clearence, with normal dual pivot calipers you can squeeze a 38mm tyre in up front.
    Brakeless should see 45mm tyres.

Depends on the tyres, i have 2 brands of 700x28, one is maybe closer to 25mm, must actually measure them one day.....

  • @edmundro I am 5'11 and I ride a 56cm Steamroller and a 56cm Cross Check. The CC has a longer reach than the Steamroller, so I reckon a 56cm should be fine, comes down to your bar and stem selection.

  • On the topic of tire size... I'll just leave this picture of a Surly Steamroller with 42cs front & rear here...

  • That looks awesome. Picture of rear clearance though?

  • I am thinking to replace my Pacer (commuting) with a Steamroller. Does the fork have mudguard eyelets?

  • nope, no eyelets

  • Well then, mudguards can do one cos centre pulls are fugly as. Will just ride something more practical if it rains.

  • I have a dark grey unstickered Steamroller frame with a dent in the downtube and the matching fork that has been sat around for two years since I moved to Plymouth. Anyone potentially interested? Willing to let go super cheap. Just need rid before moving again.

  • how big is it?

  • What size is your Pacer? I'm after a 52cm.

  • Sorry, should have said it's a 53cm frame.

  • I have a 52. Drop me a PM

  • I need to put on a rack on my roller. Because of the shorter distance commuting on the roller is possible again. Is anyone using a seatpost mounting rack like the one Topeak make or similar?

How do you find it? How much do you carry? Does it move around at all?

  • One day I might admit to myself that I can't get far enough over the bb without a gaston style seatpost

out of #internetbikefit curiosity what does this mean?

  • I don't think I neccessarily understand the issue particularly well, but I've always used knee-over-pedal-spindle (KOPS) as the main rule for fitting myself on bikes (I've read somewhere that it's maybe not as important, but I don't know). I know it feels better for me when I am further forward, so when pedals are at quarter to 3, I still feel like I can put enough power through the front foot (esp important when fixed or climbing seated).
The 56 steamroller has a 73.5 st angle, and the 53 has a 74 st angle, so for the same saddle height, the 53 steamroller would have it's saddle further forward. I think this suits me, as I have small feet and (I think) comparatively short limbs.

As an aside, this is why 'stack and reach' isn't quite the holy grail of bikefit everyone says it is, 2 bikes can have the same reach (distance from bb to stem/bars) but fit differently because of different angles.

  • cheers.

I'm trying to fine tune my straggler and something doesn't feel right and I think it has to do with where my saddle is relative to the BB. I think.

bikefitting is a minefield and surly sizing is just weird.

I thought stack and reach accounted for angles... hmph.

  • Frame is in for facing and headset. Using an old chromo salsa stem I took off my lht. V sprints are on their way.
Just need to consider drive train, bars and braks.
Has anyone used the stick on cable guides? Took a punt as they were only a quid on Ebay.
