thanks for this! I'm going to bin that BB and hope the newish UN55 I have lying about fits okay. Going to use the original headset bearings for now, as long as it's smooth ish.I'll have to locate a crankset on the 'bay/lfgss for now because there is no cycle jumble near me until one in Sheffield in October.
Bearings are the right way round as you have them.
If either the cups, cones or bearings have any pitting it could be very hard to see with the naked eye but will feel very obvious when it's all assembled. That said, it might not even be noticeable when riding and it won't kill you.
A big upgrade to the feel (and look) of the bike would be a proper crankset, rather than the disposable noodly thing you have. Try get down to a bike jumble or coop, you should be able to pick up a decent Shimano square taper for not very much at all.
