I just don't think the market is there for a premium product like this, I'm afraid.
The vast majority of people use GPS devices to record their activities on routes they know. Route finding is a minority interest.

My mate always gets us straight to the pub with his Etrex 20 when we have had enough of following the caprices of my 800.

Quad Lock do an out front mount, their system is excellent in my opinion. Just get a quad lock and use your phone with google maps. Frame bag or TT bag with USB battery if you're worried about battery life.

Cheers all.
@TM - those Quad locks actually look pretty good (and i see they are available with waterproof cases) so maybe I'll just get a decent phone and give that a go.
@fussballclub - does this mean that the Etrex 20 has turn by turn sat nav?
-
• #4431
The etrex 20 does indeed have turn by turn navigation, additionally it can tell the difference between gpx tracks and gpx routes. For on road turn by turn us gpx routes. I usually use a gpx track on mine and follow the big arrow. The arrow points in the direction you need to go, useful when there are no roads.

sounds good man.
can you tap in a postcode and go from wherever, or is it more plan a route beforehand and upload? -
• #4433
It is possible to put in an address this of course depends on the maps on the device.
The etrex has hundreds if not thousands of POI's look here to see the options. Personnally I generally preplan a route and load a gpx track.

Not sure if this is the right place to post...
I'm having problems getting my Garmin 920xt to sync to the iphone application "Garmin Connect" with any reliability. Sometimes it can take an hour to begin to sync any information via bluetooth. It's not that there is a problem once it's syncing, just that it takes so long to connect (even though the watch and phone recognises the BT connection)
Does anyone know a way to force it to sync, or a solution?
Cheers -

Does anyone know a way to force it to sync, or a solution?
You can force sync the fenix three by going to BlueTooth then selecting Sync.
I'd delete the bluetooth pairing and set up again if you haven't tried that already.

Long shot, anyone got a spare quarter turn stem mount and cable they're not using that I can have?

Anyone here use the garmin 820 explore?
Wondering whether it would be a good choice for me as I'm more interested in working and easy navigation when riding(for possible touring as well) rather than all that performance related information.
Have heard something about touch screen issues on the regular edge 820 but are they apparent also with the explore? And if someone is using the 820 could they tell more about the "issues" relating to the touch screen or whether they actually exist?
-
• #4439
Never used the explore but I can't imagine it would be 'better' than the normal 820, and I'm afraid the issues really do exist (even if they are manageable).
Of course, cough spam cough, you could do worse than buying mine (fresh from Garmin no less)..

@HoKe , I don't have a cable I'm afraid but I do have a spare mount if you still need?

I'm sure this might've been discussed here before but any insight into this situation:
Went for a 5/6 hour ride on Sunday with my edge 200, working fine using a route I made on ridewithGPS whilst recording an activity all working fine. Finished the route saved the route and I saw it on my activities folder. Plugged it into my macbook to find it wasn't being recognised at first 2/3 attempts later (all after safely removing) it finally realised it was being plugged into a laptop and garmin express finally found the device unfortunately now theres 0 activities and my activity folder is busted its a Unix Executable File whatever that is and I can't open into it. Factory resets don't work. I feel like I'm going to have to re-format and go that way.
Any advice?

• #4441
I would try plugging it into a windows machine first, alternatively if you have an android phone use an OTG cable and plug it into that and use something like total commander to get the activites onto your phone if possible.

Cheers mate! I'll give that a try this evening. Unfortunately I don't have an android phone. Might pester a colleague to help me out

Hi all, I'm planning a short tour in France in a couple of weeks and am looking at route and navigation options...
If I make the route into .gpx files can I save them and use them abroad on a Garmin 200 as a backup to just follow a line? I don't need to record anything I just want to follow a route... any thoughts? I'm not too hot with technology! (I'll be using my iPhone primary navigation device)
Cheers in advance,
Matt -

Quite sure it's TCX format 200 eats (drop in NewFiles folder)
-
• #4445
Ah cool - thank you, so this should then work en France? I don't need euro maps or whatever you can get with high spec Garmins? It should just show me my route as a line floating in space that I can use to judge my general direction against... like whether to turn left or right at a junction etc?
A mate has just offered to lend me his Edge 1000... is this a better option than a phone and a 200? I have a dynamo so battery life shouldn't be a concern!
Cheers again!

200 does what you describe - Simple and Snake-like (3310). Keep routes under 150km.

Etrex owners - Just received an Etrex 30x with the Topoactive maps (Western Europe) it seems this is adequate for my needs but wanted owners opinions on Open Source mapping .
Is it worth using Open Source mapping? Does it add noticeable pros over the Topoactive?
-
• #4449
I think they both have their place, I find the open source maps better for more off road type cycling. i.e. tracks .Also prefer the open source for hiking.
-
• #4450
Cheers, for the moment it will be used for on road navigation so probably fine with the Topoactive, it seems detailed enough for me at first glance.
I have OSMand on my phone as a backup regardless
It's embarrassing how often I go for a chilled Sunday ride and end up on the a31
