  • I have received a 46T Stronglight chainring that has no ramp or pins. Am I being being optimistic thinking it's still going to shift (other chainring is a 30)?

  • Am I being being optimistic thinking it's still going to shift...

Is it an old, double or triple ring, or a new, single one?

Ramps & pins weren't introduced until the early-nineties, so an old ring will shift, but not as smoothly or quietly as a modern one.

If it's a new, single specific ring the teeth will be taller to stop the chain coming off, ie stop it shifting.

What speed chain are you using? 9 speed and up are narrower between the links than 8 speed and earlier, so a modern chain will be snug on an old ring. This won't help shifting and will wear the chain and ring more quickly.
