Another one I've tried, with degreaser in a large jar. Again, I never felt it managed to shift as much as other people said it would. Maybe I'm expecting too much. Or had shit degreaser.

Before O ring motorcycle chains I used to stick a chain in a ice cream carton or similar and soak it in petrol. Then I'd hang the chain up to dry then coil it up and put it in solid wax and melt it on the stove. Something similar to what I used is still available now. Putoline wax
Potentially dangerous and messy but I did it at my mum's house.

Put it in a robust plastic bottle such as an old bleach bottle, quarter fill with white spirit, shake like f**k, pour out the gunk into an other bottle. The gunk will settle out after a time and you can reuse the white spirit. Wipe and allow to dry.
