This is what I do, except I use paraffin instead of white spirit because I have a bigger bottle of that.
White spirit would probably have the benefit of evaporating off the chain a lot quicker, whereas paraffin tends to stick around and dilute whatever lube you use
An old 4pt plastic milk bottle does the trick just fine, btw
