Seems a bit odd to me, if you're gonna do gears why not get 9/10/11 etc rather than go to the effort of putting gears but only having 3
Main reason I can think of is it would allow you to build a dishless rear wheel for loaded touring? And I suppose it's probably lighter than an AM.
