Put it in a robust plastic bottle such as an old bleach bottle, quarter fill with white spirit, shake like f**k, pour out the gunk into an other bottle. The gunk will settle out after a time and you can reuse the white spirit. Wipe and allow to dry.

This is what I do, except I use paraffin instead of white spirit because I have a bigger bottle of that.
White spirit would probably have the benefit of evaporating off the chain a lot quicker, whereas paraffin tends to stick around and dilute whatever lube you useAn old 4pt plastic milk bottle does the trick just fine, btw

Another one I've tried, with degreaser in a large jar. Again, I never felt it managed to shift as much as other people said it would. Maybe I'm expecting too much. Or had shit degreaser.
