  • Got given a Seiko 4205 and the stem is broken. Am I right in saying that all I need to do is buy a replacement crown and stem and pop out the old one out by pressing this button?

...So on closer inspection, the stem has snapped right at the crown. How on earth do I extract the remaining stem from the crown with nothing to grab? Can a replacement be sourced?

  • once again I have committed myself to something without realizing the funds first!
So as a result I have been told by my financial controller ( ie she who must be obeyed ) that I need to adhere to the strict "one in one out" rule.
Therefore from my own collection I am unloading this Seamaster 300 diver. Cheap, but probably needs a service as is running a bit fast and was last done about 6 years ago. Box and papers new in 2005. Pm for details

  • Can you see any of the stem? Enough to grab with needle nose pliers?

If you can't, then with extra care drop the movement out into your hand, by angling the case, but this risks damage if you can't do it effectively. If you get the movement out with the stem then use pliers and a movement holder.

  • I always liked the Aevig Balaur

    'tis nice.

Related - anyone know of a Aevig Corvid quartz for sale? They look like they go for peanuts.

  • Replacement should be possible if there is nothing left to grip. Be warned though, choosing the right replacement is tricky!

Cousins should have the right thing in stock though

Edit: any chance of a pic of the crown and case?

  • Thanks @pdlouche getting the stem out of the movement. Should be easy (he says...) - it's getting the snapped stem out of the crown which is going to be tricky :/

Sorry, camera on phone is bad

  • You'll need a new crown. Give me a while to do some digging

Is there a case number on the back? Normally in this sort of format 7N43-9011

  • Thanks, I really, really appreciate it.

I've read up on people using alum solution to dissolve away old stems, but I'd rather just go new. Cousins had a few screws-down crowns available - I'll get the calipers out an measure up.

  • Actually, will start 4205 but have another 4 chars after

  • Cousins don't have any, they are listed as obsolete so your best bet is that ebay ad, a donor watch or lucking out for NOS from somewhere

  • Fuck me that was painful. I don't ever want to replace hands without fitting tools, nor do I wanna broach/ream hands that are too small to fit the movement. Very hassle.

Still need to find a nice red second hand for the chrono.

These are not the hands I wanted as replacements, but the Sekonda needed to be destroyed, and the Gul I had in the parts bin was no good.

  • Very cool watch you've ended up with though! Well done.

  • Thanks. The lume isn't great, and the watch is probably 20-odd years old so all the phosphorescence has gone. Really wanted huge chunky hands but the small Seiko'nda hands with points are quite nice.

I'd painted the bezel black a few weeks ago, original bare metal was driving me mad.

It's getting there, I suppose this is my rat watch.

  • Can someone explain the flags to the ignorant thankyou please.

  • Flags are usually a piece of cloth attached to a pole and used a symbol or emblem for a country, area or organisation.

  • Hint: two of the flags are repeated

  • Are they usually cloth tho? #justsayin

  • Yeah no idea what white circle on blue is?

  • I think you need to suffer until you work it out, like I suffered.

  • Also used in the past to make a claim of ownership if the forrins that live there do not have their own flag. The simple act of placing the pole with the flag attached means that the whole land mass below that flag is yours.

  • Sorry.

  • To me it looks like Spain Japan and the Minolta Corp have the rub of the green?
