  • @Stonehedge looks great irl, via the Internet...

Good purchase. Although I think you need hairier arms and the top 3 buttons of your shirt open when you wear it.

  • Omega have sent me a magazine with a variety of articles on magnetism, it's actually really interesting. If they post you one give it a read before it hits the recycling bin.

  • Please post scans for the poor and ignorant (me).

  • All this bimetallic Jizz made me dig out my old quartz 2000 series techniques wid the champers face. #marmite

  • Why are the hands a different colour?

  • Rubber strap is fine (has a nice brass buckle) but I'm not a fan of rubber straps and it's a bit bulky (and smells of vanilla strangely).

In other news, I noticed yesterday that the corporate finance partner at my place has a bi-metallic Rolex sub ...

  • Explorer is more better

  • a) I like the story - why it was made originally, the 15,000 gauss rating that it has now, the clever movement.

    b) I also find that I really miss my Steinhart with it's grey face and old-style lume - which of course many hate, but I like the look.

    c) That said I like the Explorer, but it's also many more dollar.

  • Dare I say it. The Railmaster could be more exclusive than an Explorer.

Not sure about the hands mind.

  • At the moment it's significantly more exclusive as you can't buy the fucker, anyone seen when it will be released?

  • Picked up an IWC Mk 10 today for £700 in original condition. Very good deal.

  • That railmaster is everything that is wrong with the world (and also Omega). It's a homage watch with faux patina, a fabricated story, artificial scarcity and a x3 price tag. It's designed for middle-aged men who need to be able to justify an expensive watch as an "investment piece" but wont go to the effort of tracking down a real vintage watch.
Don't fall for the marketing hype, this is a company that has totally lost its way and is coasting on its brand heritage. Pretty much everything Omega sell now except maybe the speedmaster pro is a reissue of something they stopped selling in the 70's/80's.

  • Yea...but...what if it had an NJS stamp on the back of it?

  • As a brand if you didn't reproduce and rerelease cult classics to meet demand then you would be very foolish.

Your company? Or you just work there?

If the former, would you take a load of web site advice? Your site can be made significantly faster and if you have some degree of control over your ecommerce platform then it could look a lot better on mobile too. But even without that level of control it can be much faster.

  • I'm struggling to think of another brand that shamelessly reproduces its own discontinued watches and fake ages them to look like they are vintage. Obviously many watch brands maintain and evolve a design, as Omega does with the speedmaster or Rolex does with the sub, but that's totally different from reissuing something from the past as as straight copy and then making it look vintage.
When Rolex revived the millgauss for example, it looked nothing like the 1019. Tudor's heritage line definitely gives a nod to the big blocks and the subs, but they're clearly not reissues of old watches.

What's next, new watches with tropical dials?

  • The anniversary Railmaster (and Seamaster, Speedmaster) are as exact copies of the originals as Omega can create:

The new Railmaster model isn't, though:

The lume is, I grant you, "vintage", which many hate - I like it. It's also got the latest >15,000 gauss movement, which when tested alongside the logical competition was validated.

If you put the 2017 Railmaster side-by-side with a Milguass I (again personally) would choose the Omega:

  • Those lugs on the middle one are just really, really nice.

  • The new Railmaster model isn't, though:

Ah I see. ok. I still think the idea of making a new watch look like an old one is just an odd thing to do. Admittedly I'm totally biased, in the last 15 years I've seen one new watch that I like (the Tudor BBN), other than being waterproof I don't understand the attraction of new watches.

Answering my own question, but Zenith are also getting up to this nonsense with their 146 heritage. New, around £6k, original around £2k:

  • This is properly good.... and gold.

  • I don't understand the attraction of new watches.

Original Railmaster is £26,000, 2017 Railmaster is £3,600.

  • Never noticed them on the Speedmaster. Guess they're more obvious with a plain steel bezel.
And a fun watch, that Tintin!

  • What even are you?
