He's had a major knee injury, that stopped him training for at least a month.

I'd imagine he'll start the Vuelta as one of the favourites.

After 4 crashes in 2 stages and many minutes time loss before stage 12, of course he got leeway.

They were minor crashes. He's past it, relegated to futile attacks for the cameras rather than race changing or even race winning ones.

The Croix de Fer goes on and on. I did it in the rain on the Marmotte and felt like I'd been climbing for ages only to pass under the 25 kms to go to the summit banner. Looks like the weather is a lot better today.
