Tap update: took a basin out, managed to semi-dismantle tap only to find that the top part of the spout just unscrews from the base, no tools required. Destroyed o-ring clearly visible (with a load of furring). Now can't get tap base out to clean because however it splits is currently a mystery. There was once a grub screw but it's missing...
Edit: was happy to leave this for ages but MIL did something and it started leaking again.
