  • ESI's what I've been recommended. Yet to purchase though.

  • Yikes. Looks like it takes in similar trails around Minehead. Might need a more XC-oriented bike for that though - obviously the bike is the limiting factor, not the rider...

  • Looks great. You got a gpx of the route? I'm collecting routes around Exmoor ahead of an often delayed trip out to the west. Hopeful of early autumn now.

  • The long route is here
There are a couple of obvious cut-off points if you wanted to shorten it. Well worth going up to Dunkery to include the best DH section.

  • Thanks. Looks great. I'll add it to my pile of Exmoor GPX files. Planning a route from Taunton, via the Quantocks with some looping about on Exmoor before getting the steam train back towards Taunton. Wild camping most probably. Don't want to miss the good bits though!

  • ESI, always. Used them forever on my rigids. Or the aliexpress equivalent, which are identical and about £3

  • Another recommendation for ESI Chunky grips.

After about a decade of using lock-on grips, I was a bit concerned about them moving about, but they haven't budged so far.

  • Cheers folks - esi it is

Are these the ones that need some persuasion to get on?

A little bit of isopropyl alcohol, and hand strength slightly exceeding that of a 2 year old child should make it easy :-)

  • Mine have started tearing. Comfy though.

  • isopropyl alcohol

Best to dilute to 70% so it doesn't evaporate too quickly, ime

  • Or drink it faster

  • I'm guessing this is the best place to ask. Just snagged this for £8 and want to put a rigid fork on it. What rough a-c figure should I aim for? It's an all terra from 2009. Thanks.

  • It's a GT Avalanche 1.0. The 2009 model came specced with a Rock Shock Dart 3 fork, which had an a-c measurement of 471mm.

Been doing the same thing since my bmx days with lighter fluid, I thought I was the only one.

  • odi toadstool / mushroom grips are really comfy and are nice and grippy

  • Going rigid, I'd go 450-460mm otherwise it'll feel bargey with a sagless fork.

  • Ta, ordered a pair in fetching black. Went for the race thickness (thin).

  • Thanks @Landslide @Emyr , sounds like the surly troll fork (among others probably) would work.

  • 1x1 fork would be a better option if you want a more forgiving ride. Or a 450mm Salsa CroMoto, if you can find it, absolutely love the one I have on my Kona.

Edit: on closer inspection maybe the troll fork isn't any beefier than the 1x1 fork, but I find that surprising

  • Yeah they're the same weight apparently but troll has lots of eyelets.

  • Anyone using the Rock Razor tyre? Few folks at Peaslake pairing them up with a large magic Mary front for apparently great rolling and ridic grip.

  • Doesn't sound far off the popular Minion SS + DHF combo, which would be my preference if I had money to play around with tyres

  • I'm entered - see how my recovery goes as to whether I can actually do it. If I do I'll bring a spare water container.

    Warning - it's brutal!
