  • £1,800 for a Brompton that eschews mudguards and racks to be 'racy'. What the f*ck? I got rid of mine within 6 weeks because it was like a peice of spaghetti under load. Carbon up and get some stiffness in the front end at least. I had /some/ respect for Millar's lifestyle brand ambitions but with this junk? GTFO.

  • The pimping has begun, new M-handle bars, 2-speed conversion kit, new suspension block and clamp set.

    @edscoble - Evans are telling me that fitting the 2-speed kit to a SS bike is an all day job, so it is a Gold Service. The part fitting is easy - but getting the shifter to work properly takes ages apparently. I call bullshit - what is the reality?

  • Having done that before, getting the shifter to work properly isn't difficult, the hard part is ensuring that we do have all the necessary part to make it work (inc. the right chain length, sprocket sizes, cables length), it just take time to ensure everything is fitted.

    A Gold Service sound OTT but it kinda make sense because it's technically a groupset fitting! especially with the additional work of suspension block, clamp etc.

    Can you claritfy by what you meant by the new handlebar? I know you're talking about the newer shape handlebar, but what were you changing from? this is the only complication I can think of as the stem is slightly taller on the newer Brompton with the newer handlebar (the old one have a slightly shorter stem, but a taller handlebar) thus the cable housing length may not be 100% the right length to enable it to fold perfectly.

  • That is the thing @edscoble I am going to do the hinge clamps, block and saddle myself. They are doing purely the conversion for me. I ordered the conversion parts through Evan using my C2W voucher.

    I have the M-fork, but I swapped out the bars for a stem adaptor and MTB riser bar some years back. (Photos back in this thread.) - now I am going to the new M-bar because I like it better, plus it means I can get rid of the adaptor too. I had new M-length cables fitted in February. So cable length is not a problem. Getting the stem adaptor off and the bars in is time consuming, I know it too me a while getting it in - but not all day. Then take off the brake lever, and mount new lever with shifter. Take SS tensioner off and replace with new derailer. Take current sprocket of wheel and fit the 2 new sprockets. Replace chain, get shifter working. If I wasn't a lazy sod, I would do it myself and just get them to fix the shifter. I might still do t.hat.

    If that's the price then the CHPT (which is titanium as the description mentions black painted titanium, no?) for £1800 is hardly more shocking than a normal Ti Brompton?

  • Considering getting a Brompton, but the secondhand ones seem to be around 80% of the cost of new. Can any Brompton owners tell me if this is the norm? Or do I just have to wait for it to rain for the prices to fall?

  • The rear triangle hinge.

    The other hinge is the main frame to front headtube can only be replaced at least twice before retiring it.

  • I've got one of these for gratis if it's any good to you. I'll check it over as I think it needs a drill/tap where the rollers attach. If it's any good to you it's postage cost only. When I'm at home I'll take a pic of it if I can find it in the garage.

  • So I've been using this 'service' for the past two months, and it genuinely feels like I'm a beta tester of it.

    The Kings Cross dock is frequently out of service, the mobile phone app is full of bugs, I've multiple instances of making reservations only for the dock not to recognise the code supplied and have had different reservation codes shown in the app and in email and text messages.

    On the plus side, the helpline staff are very, very helpful and have resolved most of my issues when contacted.

  • Another day, another bug. I went to collect a bike this morning, but the machine didn't recognise the code I'd been given when I reserved it. A quick phone call resolved that, but now I can't book to return the bike because the system still thinks I have a reservation so won't allow me to book a return.

  • Does that mean you just scored a free Brompton?

  • Maybe. I had one last week which they didn't think I'd collected. Should've kept quiet and kept it.

  • Fuck calling them every time you need a dock opened.

    Its terrible.
