    I'd be happy with a 32 on the back, for the not-so-occasional 15-20% inclines. I've got the same ratios on my winter/tourer and whilst I'm grateful for the smaller gears when it's loaded, I can also stay in the big ring most of the time for faster unloaded rides.

  • This was my thinking. For loaded and hilly the addition of an ultra compact crankset could be an option, but that's expensive and would probably leave me under-geared on the flat.

  • Loaded + hilly = triple. It's not fashionable, but it works really well. I use 26-42-52 witha 12-30 and it's always useful to have that bail out gear if you're loaded.
    If you really want to use 11spd you can use the inner and middle ring of a triple to cover yourself (comparison here). Do you really need a 50/11?
