C_G, Your last sentence sums up my experience of the 7 or so Dun Runs I've done.
Some of the best conversations/ talking absolute b0ll0x I've had, have taken place with complete strangers, ~75% into the ride, flaked out on grassy roadside verges, no longer feeling that there's any need to rush.
Bliss.
You avoid the worst offenders if you leave late, take it easy, stop for beers. The advantage of this is you get to see the sun come up over fields of wheat, always thought arriving on the beach for sun up was a bit overrated. Plus, like in the London Marathon, the nicer people are slower.
