Middleburn shirley

I've never been overly impressed by my last set of middleburns, with the external BB. Had them come loose too many times.

Get a proper one with a square taper bb then. Or SKF ISIS

My Middleburns creaked incessantly. I'd remove all bolts, clean and regrease everything, put it back together and it'd be quiet for 5 minutes then it'd start again. Not really a fan of that pre-load collar system either.
I switched to Shimano XT. Proprietary BCD is a bit of a pain but Shimano narrow wide chainrings are readily available from 30-34t, and reasonably priced. New(er) SLX look good too.

I had the same issue Jon mentioned below but with my original square taper version back when they first made them. Used to have to constantly remove the cranks and clean inside the taper and clean the BB spindle or they just creaked all the time.
I've had three different types of middleburns over the years... Given up on them now.
Once I get new cranks these are going. -

Shame. My ISIS Middleburns were fine (90kg) and Kate's square taper are still going strong (62kg), but such things always seem pretty random I guess. My otherwise well-regarded XT cranks creak like fuck on my Kona.
crank troublems :(

Any opinions on a Haro Mary SS 29er? Seems like it's got an EBB but can't find a full geo chart (stack and reach). If it handles anything like my 1x1 but with bigger wheels that'd be fine I guess.

mick mcarthy has one i believe

Yup, I had one for around 3 years (before upgrading F+F).
(Don't look at the seatpost...)
You can find geo info on page 86 here: https://issuu.com/harobikes/docs/haromtb2009catalog
Unless you're specifically looking for an EBB (or you're getting a great deal on it), I'd recommend going for an On One Inbred or similar. I found the EBB on an MTB needs a good clean pretty regularly to stop it seizing up. Also it had the worst forks I've ever encountered on an MTB, ridiculously stiff. Swapped them out for some nice Salsa CroMoto forks which improved the bike a lot.

Don't worry about the post, some tandem-owning friends had one, retinas already scarred etc.
Spotted that chart, shame it's missing a few numbers but I can get a rough idea of the sizing anyway. Good to know about the forks too. Ideally I'd go for something fancy and with track ends but the market's a lot smaller over here (only seen a single on-one in the last 5 months...) and being cheap is the priority.
Will see what the bikepackers of New Zealand can dig out of their sheds and how much the guy wants for this. It's only got to ride the length of the country in the new year... :/

I'm not sure about the EBB issues, I have one on my Singular Swift and it's super simple, never creaked, really easy to adjust with no maintenance to speak of really.
This is seriously cool
