What's the fattest tyre I could put on a pair of shimano wh501?
I wouldn't go over 28. I put some Marathon Supreme 40s on a pair of R500s once, and they were a disaster.
Around £65 will get you a pair of Rodi Vision 25 rims and some Claris hubs. Admittedly, adding spokes and building is going to take you a little over R501 money, but it would be well worth it in order to get wheels which will work properly with 38-40mm tyres.

I'd like to go >32 and possibly up to 40c (marathon supreme). It's for the mum bike. Or I'd consider a cheap 650b that would let me put big tyres on.
