  • My headset is a bit knackered after 4 years. Is it worth going for anything but the standard Brompton headset? It's only £11......don't mind spending more if there's something with more longevity.

  • Hey, I've asked before and got no response but thought I'd ask again. Does anyone have a superlight front wheel? Mine has some lateral play in it. No great problem but I'd like to fix it. Am I missing something from the hub?

If not I'm fairly sure its been machined badly as I can't push the end caps on anymore than they are.

I'm going to get some very thin washers and put them in there to take up the play. See how that goes.

  • Nah, Brompton headset last for ages when adjusted well, they usually wear out due to two factor; headset was too tight, or headset was too loose.

  • How the fuck did I live in London for almost a decade without a brompton!? MIND. BLOWN.

Although missus has already nicked it :(

  • I want to go faster on my Brompton. I've got a 53T up front and a 2 speed hub. Living in pan flat Cambridge I've never used the big rear cog.

Has anyone dropped the tooth count out back? What's the advice?

  • I wish to glide gracefully to my commute KOMs. Any more than 100rpm and people can tell I'm trying.

  • I have entered a Brompton hillclimb, how can I get lower gearing?

  • Don't. Seated grind ftw, you can't climb a Brompton out of the saddle, the bars canny take it.

  • 39t chainring, or a 40t.

  • Pretty sure it's been asked before but is it possible to run an Ultegra 6800 chainset on a Brompton?

  • Obvs was joking and will mash up in top gear.

I do ride out of the saddle plenty though, is this bad?

  • Not all bars. Straight bars are fine

  • Can't see why not.
I'm running an Alfine on mine (although I wouldn't recommend running an Alfine on a Brompton - heavier than the original)

  • Cogs from the 6 speed are interchangeable with the 2. I dropped the 12 to a 13 with great success. You could try changing out the larger cog too. Some Shimano cogs are compatible too.

  • I was going to freecycle these but they're from a Brompton so why not this thread. I was given a 5 speed SA hubbed rear wheel, toggle and SA shifter. I am told 2nd gear is a bit defective but I've not been in a position to check. I don't need them so anyone want either/both gratis + Hermes.

  • Took my Brompton into Edwards's yesterday to replace the headset. Also turns out that I need the hinge replaced 😬

  • Also turns out that I need the hinge replaced

Standard stuff really. they do need replacing at least once a year (depend on usage).

  • @amey - Welcome to the club!

  • £1800 for a two-tone Brommie with gumwalls?

If anyone buys that, then they are stupid.

  • Proper dad jeans on Millar

  • Empty EPO vial hidden in the telescopic seat tube?

  • I like the tan wall Kojaks though. I wonder if they'll be available on the open market.

  • The real question is, how quickly it will become a standard Kojak after numerous commute.
