  • What's the deal with the Mercedes Benz hour hand? I see it a lot on fakes, repros and cheapos... is it the most commonly sourced replacement hand set?

  • Nope that's just you're typical RWC sports watch hour hand.

Nothing major behind the symbol accept for the fact that there is a large surface area of superlum and if the "Merc" symbol was absent from the hour hand the lum could easily fall out if the case or crown took a large enough impact.

Also the old school fixing agent deteriorated after time so as hands aged the overall stability would decrease anyway.

I used to see this problem frequently on old Tudor Sub "snowflake" hands. It can be corrected by application of a fixing lacquer to the underside of the hands during a service though before it's too late.

  • I see.

Definitely seen the issue of loose lumes in a lot of watches. In fact I could do with new hands in my Stendardo diver from a few pages back because the skeleton-like hands are difficult to read. However, that hour hand is just so ugly.

  • I don't know how established the various theories behind the mercedes hands are but I assumed that they are just a Rolex variation of the cathedral hand that was very popular in utility watches in the past.

  • I bought one for £13 from china once. Was a great watch until it started running backwards. I expected more from Rolex.

  • I bought a non-worker for 50p to look inside. Nice heavy case, bad case back, and I think it was a Miyota inside mine. Shame it didn't work with a new battery, screw-down crown and everything.

Really not a fan of the hands, but interested in the theories.

At some point I'm going to get one of these on a black leather alligator strap:

    a bit like:

... I like the smaller size and the steel body. If £s was no object a white gold proper president with a fluted bezel would be nice, but there's something a bit less overt about the Tudor version, and it doesn't have roman numerals (which I'm not a fan of).

  • Sorry this must get asked the whole time, but I can't get the search to work on my phone right now.

    Asking for a friend -
Can anyone advise on a place to get a mechanical watch (inexpensive, sentimental value) serviced/overhauled in London?

    Cheers
    Thomas

  • Basically the Rolex Geneva PR dept. haven't come up with an official theory as such.

It's based around it's functionality to keep the tritium in place and the Mercedes symbol was reasonably aesthetically pleasing.

I've seen a very old prototype hour hand in which the tritium was only halved but at the time the watchmakers still were not happy with the security.

The tritium compound of old was not very good at staying put, it dried out pretty quickly, cracked, got dusty and fell out.

Thankfully lum technology has come a very long way in 40 years and we don't need to worry about surface area like the watchmakers had to back in the day.

The merc symbol isn't needed anymore but will remain as part of the heritage.

Still prefer something like the Tudor snowflake though.

  • City Watch Services. The Arcade. Liverpool St. Always used them. Totally helpful and reasonable.

  • Cathedral hands date back to the very early 1900s

In fact, Rolex seem to have used them before lume was a thing.
