  • Where are you based? I have a pair of old ultegra SPD-SL which realistically I'm not going to use, but are probably going to be better than anything below current ultegra level. With SPD-SL you want reasonably high level, so that the pedal hangs nicely for you to kick into when you're engaging

    Shoes is a really personal thing; focus on getting something that fits you well, best bet is to go to a shop and try out different brands at least to work out what their sizing is like

    How important is it to buy shoes a bit bigger than I usually wear? I've read that feet swell but doesn't that apply to regular street shoes, too?

  • Size is hard to quantify - it should absolutely apply the same as street shoes - but how many times are you walking solidly for 4-5 hours (i.e. a long bike ride). But that said I don't think you need to size up necessarily, just be aware that you may need to adjust as you go
