Where are you based? I have a pair of old ultegra SPD-SL which realistically I'm not going to use, but are probably going to be better than anything below current ultegra level. With SPD-SL you want reasonably high level, so that the pedal hangs nicely for you to kick into when you're engaging
Shoes is a really personal thing; focus on getting something that fits you well, best bet is to go to a shop and try out different brands at least to work out what their sizing is like

SPD-SL is winning right now as I don't plan to commute clipless. Are there any forum favourites regarding pedals and shoes?
