  • Superbike territory, can't imagine what that's like in a car! Going fast on 4 wheels feels a great deal less natural that it does on 2 (for me at least....)

I'd love a go in a Westfield or something like that - it's the sensation of a lot of weight flying around that gives me the willies in normal cars.

  • @Dammit - they're pretty incredible, but not fantastic.
Driving- probably one of the easiest cars to get used to- nice road feel, cornering is pretty accurate. Speed- incredible- utter madness.
Self-driving- not perfect- but for motorway miles pretty amazing.
Space- really nice interior, loads of room for bikes + people.
Doors- the issues are apparently now solved, so as long as you buy a new one- you're fine.

All in all- go test drive it- if its a realistic option- it should be somewhere near the top of your list.

  • It has a bioweapon defense mode that creates positive pressure in the cabin to protect occupants.

Getting rid of the diesel Passat just got one step more attractive.

  • Problem is charging.

Our block has a couple of lifts - lifts are (generally) three-phase, so there' 90% chance that we have a three phase supply. But - I'd have to square with the management company the project required to take a feed from the incoming three phase, put a meter etc in that was registered to me, then run a decent cable out to the parking space (which belongs to a neighbour, who has no car, who allows me to use it. largely I suspect to stop someone he doesn't know parking there, and that I'd have to buy from him in the potential Tesla situation) where I'd then need to install a charging pillar.

I'd say probably ten grand for that lot. By contrast, there's a petrol station on the way to the Horniman.

  • Pretty sure the Tesla onboard computer knows where all the superchargers are. Their PR says "up to 170 miles of range in 30 minutes", probably enough to either get where you're going or get to the next charging station.

Tesla says Model X can do up to 351 miles range. If it's mostly London commuting, you'll probably only need to charge it once a week, do your shopping at Westfield while it maxes out.

  • I'd say probably ten grand for that lot.

So a couple of months of porker money?

  • The 911 is, bar the bodywork, done - or, rather, I'm not anticipating costs other than petrol until the end of summer.

^^I don't commute by car, most of the time the Volvo (current haulage vehicle) sits in it's parking space, gets used to go and visit my parents (~200 mile round trip) or to Saino's for a decent shop.

TBH the idea of spending the money that a Model X costs for that use case doesn't actually make a lot of sense. They are cool though.

  • Is that the mad expensive V8 Hayabusa engine?

  • sure, until you find a pulled thread in the carpet and have the whole thing reupholstered...

    :)

  • I'm not anticipating costs

    Porsche owner's mantra

  • I had a couple of passenger laps on Brands Indy in a turbo Westy and the guy was mobbing. Easily the fastest car out on track by a longshot and there were so many turbo sounds.

They're just insane, on slicks the cornering speeds are next level, and then there's mad acceleration out of the corner.

  • Oh I've just seen that Elise video is the V8 Hayabusa engine. Those are awesome. Big money though.

  • Don't think the RST is Busa-based. Gixxer 1000 I think.

  • I had a look at the next gen version of the Elise engine on the website. I think the only Busa bits left are the heads.

The longer stroke GSXR1000s could be a handy platform as they're a lot more compact. Frigging epic engines too.

  • Picked up a Saab 9-5 tid today. '07, 6k miles (!), pretty well looked after and for decent monies. Very happy.

    I'm gonna miss the mercedes.

  • Welcome to the family! Broken xenon angle control units, busted turbo, rusty fuel lid cover and seized hand brake in the winter (water ingress in cable outer) are the problems we've had with ours. 210k kms on it now though so not very surprising.

  • Spotted a 93x in the wild today. Mildly aroused.

  • It's still £3k above my budget. No children to put in it either

I'll stick to my Audi 80

  • Possible causes for 5-10mm vertical play in a steering column? Specifically in a 306 gti6...

And, cosmetic perfection versus mechanicals -good mechanicals are better right?

  • Sounds like classic stuff. Mine had the turbo gone (I think, previous owner not sure), rusty fuel lid is there, early rust on rear wheel arches and rear breaks needs replacing (discs, pads, handbrake)

Had a look at parts last night, dead cheap for decent stuff. Gotta love out-of-business car makers :)

  • Yeah, wheel arches on mine too. Forgot about those ;)

  • It's also gonna be interesting to see how cheap we can run it. I've heard others being able to get 56mpg from it but I expect 40-45 is more realistic. I just drove it for half an hour home last night and it's hard to resist going into sport mode and give it some beans. It's not a quick car per se, but quick enough. Glad I didn't get a petrol or even an aero one, that'd been expensive...
