  • Paired with this stem: https://www.bike24.com/p2187122.html

Doesn't the steerer taper the other way?

I've convinced a friend to order an Isen and hadn't costed for a 1 1/4" stem.

  • Ah, good.

Spending other people's money is nerve-wracking...

  • how do the pro vibe compacts compare to ergonova bars?

  • Why not just light bicycle the wheels? They are essentially the same...China carbon on Bitex hubs with fancy stickers.

  • Agreed. But better customer service, better freehub, no stress of importing. (Plus a friend works there so nice to support).

  • I rest my case. I do hear despite the waiting times due to load, they have top notch customer service and response times are on the dot. If I didn't build my own wheels, They'd be at the top of the list.

  • 650b tubeless rims
Carbon or aluminium - what are the options?

  • Carbon is nice, but you can already get silly light 650 alloy disc rims. Hole count? Price?

Been working with some Easton Haven rims lately and they are really well made. Welded and have a nice wide internal profile.
Or the Usual DT Swiss culprits?

  • 32 hole because I am overweight

What rim would you go for? How does the Easton compare to wtb, pacenti or stans rim?

  • I've had issues (as have SBC) building Stans and getting the wheels to hold tension (bladed and non bladed spokes) when combined with tubeless (Various Schwalbe tyres, Gravel kings and Horizons).
I've had a few instances of people reporting cracked Pacentis so I'm averse to them, but call that a bias.
WTB is currently at the top of the list. KOM 25's are silly light and plenty strong with all the lacing you could wish for.
I simply like the Easton ARC as they have a nicer profile. They are about 20g heavier though, but I suppose that's because they're using 6061 instead of fancy stuff. 24 internal.

Aside from that, maybe the DT Swiss 442 for comparison, but I can't remember whether they use DT's nipple system or standard stuff.

  • I think the smallest 11s cassette you can fit on a 10s freehub is an 11-40. Never tried anything smaller myself though. Would love to hear if somebody knows otherwise.

  • i currently have a 10spd disc brake wheel with a hope hub. i'd be quite happy to rebuild using that hub if i can stick and 11-34 11speed cassette on...

    https://www.bikerumor.com/2017/06/07/shimano-ultegra-r8000-picks-mechanical-di2-disc-brake-dura-ace-tech/

"11 speed cassettes for the new group are for the most part unchanged in six standard offerings: 11-25, 11-28, 11-30, 11-32, 12-25 & 14-28. But a new wider range 11-34 HG800 cassette is also being made available for those looking for proper gravel-ing gearing. The 11-34 is actually designed to fit on the narrower freehub body of a mountain bike hub, so it is able to do double duty with an included spacer for 11-speed road hubs as well."

More gear options, while old wheels are thrown an 11-speed lifeline: Shimano adds a new Ultegra and Deore XT-level wider range 11-34t HG800 cassette, which adds a 2-tooth bigger low gear. HG800? Yes, it’s confusing, as Ultegra cassettes are R8000 while Deore XT are M8000, while Tiagra is HG500, but them’s the names. Two teeth alone might not sound like big news, but for anyone with older “10-speed” wheels, this is bigger-than-two-teeth news. The new 11-34t cassette means you can grab your old 10/9/8-speed road or mountain bike wheels and use them on your 11-speed drivetrain without a massive 11-40t, 11-42 or 11-46t cassette (and mountain bike rear derailleur) or adaptor. It’s also an interesting option to turn old 10-speed freehub wheels into viable options for 1x drivetrains, even with SRAM components.

  • y u no tell me to buy stupid expensive crabon rimz

  • HG800 cassettes are awesome. Ultegra quality to boot. Really need to be double the price, but we haven't clocked on to the fact they're as nice and charge pittance for them.
I mean, realistically, you could have always gone for SRAM's offering in 34-36, but I do prefer them Shimano qualities.

If I had to go carbon, I'd just hit up lightbicycle really. Order rims, order Bitex hubs in any goddamned configuration that you can dream of (50g heavier than a DT 240's). Spend rest on CX rays and a decent builder to lace them properly for you. Sorted.

  • Can I use that cassette with an old 10spd hope hub?

  • Which light bicycle rim would you suggest? Are they all tubeless? Would you suggest asymmetric rear?

  • The ones I've played around with, have all gone up tubeless with the Bonty Charger instantly and stayed up for a solid few hours without any fluid at all. The set I had was doored badly. The bars snapped, the front wheel needed a minor true.

I'm no wheelsmith, but those with way more experience than mine seem to suggest so. Less dishing stresses on the spokes due to wider hub spacing. Shimano seems to think so at least. They've been pushing asymmetric for a while.

As for which rim, that really depends what tyre size you're going for. How wide are you going tyre wise? 22mm internal is great and gives a really well rounded profile on G-ones at 40psi.
Really tempting to try a 24mm internal with WTB's upcoming Byway tyre.

  • Sadly the Isen takes max a 42mm tyre, the WTBs are 47mm so pretty set on g one speed tyres

  • Despite not really getting on with the Horizons, they did look good on Blunt SS (26.6 internal)

  • Yeah I feel ya. I really wanted to like them, but it was such a picky tyre. Anything outside of the perfect PSI and it got unruly.
G ones on the other hand, silly good tyre.

  • Did someone say isenseven????

  • This is fantastic! Can't understand why it hasn't been done before. Thanks for letting me know.

  • Saddlebag - alpkit, revelate or apidura?

  • Rapha
