Don't know why Spesh have added it to the new Diverge, current models don't have it, if anything I would have made a bit more clearance for bigger tyres, especially at the rear. As an otp bike I quite like em. But as you said, bit gimmicky.
Actually it make more sense to have it on the Diverge which see more rough road than the Roubaix.
I can imaging how much easier it is to relax your grip on rough gravel road.
Admittedly it's moot when they went for 650b with clearance for 47mm tyres.
