I've bought plenty of Bloc and other saftey glasses in my time, ironically at least one set that were remarkably similar to the current Rapha ones but about 5 years too early (#CSB).
I've also received a pair of real Oaklys through work, and the lens' were nice, but I've also bought replacement transition lens' from Walleva which are basically identical in visual quality. So I guess a mix of interest to see what quality was like, and the potential to put in a real lens' or one from Walleva if I thought it might be an improvement (which tbh I don't think it would be).
I guess - since it sounds like you want an opinion - it comes from cynicism at late stage capitalism. Taking sunglasses as an example; Raybans used to be a quality brand made with glass and metal, but were then bought by Luxotica (who basically have a monopoly in luxury eyewear), and quality drops whilst prices rise. There is a pretty clear change in most mass market products from a label being a signifier of a quality product, to being a Lable which is meant to signify its own value, and increasing profits through cutting costs and quality
@branwen: But you did decide to buy a fake item rather than either the real thing, a cheaper branded alternative whether Oakley or not, or generic. Why is that?
