@Batt why not single sided SPD pedals like Shimano M324? Phil's got them, she wears trainers for commute and SPDs when we go touring. Can get her to talk em up to B if it'll help?

I would recommend 1x drivetrains to anyone starting out.
This. Unless you live up Ventoux, or a hill in Leeds.
Just get a really small mtb front ring and coast down the other side :D
