Yes the bar tape will definitely have a considerable impact in the feel. Try them towards the stem uncovered.

I attached mine with some gorilla tape. Here's a shot.

Great stuff, thanks for that. As both you and @hippy have said, under tape probably doesn't help (my OCD side wants everything neat and tidy).

Is gorilla tape double sided?

The neatest solution is not to use silly climbing buttons. Move your hands around, they'll thank you in the long run.

Yes it's double sided. I like the buttons. They mean you can move your hands around, which is good in the long run, or climb.
