WRT the old tubs - pull off any lumps of old glue
Just on this point, thei nternet consensus seems to be "if you can pull it off, pull it off, if not, it's fine."
How fussy do people get? One tub (Tufo) seems to have basically no residue, but the Vittoria has loads.

I'd go with your rubric. I'd also throw the Tufo straight in the bin, but that's a little snobbish.

That's my practice tyre! I plan to sell the Vittorias, so I'm not gonna risk buggering them.

for removing glue from rims I can't recommend this stuff enough, saves sooooooo much time when you've bought a s/h wheelset with all sorts of crap on them.

My old method of acetone and elbow grease used to take hours, this is done in 5 mins. -

Looks tempting. Apparently Zipp only recommends acetone or Goof Off (whatever that is) because other products melt the decals.
As I might sell them on, I'll probably suck it up and acetone the glue off.
-
• #2432
don't. the above stuff is great, Zipp are just trying to stop you from using some crazy strong solvent like petrol or something.
The Carogna remover is safe for carbon rims.

Goof Off is an American stain remover which comes in a tin like a tin of lighter fluid. It's hard to source, expensive if you can find it, and in my experience absolutely fucking useless at removing tub glue.

So to continue this a bit, anyone got three not-shit-but-not-bling road tubs (22-25?) for sell? At least two of which match?
It's for a build I call 'C.R.E.A.M.Y. period-incorrect 90s carbon biek'.

Anyone used one of these to fix a tub?

Do people still repair tubs instead of sticking some sealant in ?
@timmah! Thanks for posting about the Carogna remover, will be buying a tub of that

Well, my emergency 130g Tufo Elite Jet 130 got pressed into service today. I punctured a Corsa CX on a drainage grating, and a full can of Pitstop did nothing to seal it. Fitting the Tufo, dry, and rode the 25km back home over a variety of Gran Canarian road surfaces. It's now off the wheel and rolled away back in the tiny saddle bag it came out of. And a new Corsa CX is drying overnight. For a 130g indoor track tub, stuffed into a saddle bag for 3 years, I'm quite impressed by its durability.

Sounds like it will serve again, which is always handy.
Whereabouts in Gran Canaria are you staying? I'm looking at booking for end of May (possibly).
-
• #2439
Staying in Tejeda. It's a great place to stay - there's four routes out of town: a steep climb, a really steep climb, a really steep bumpy climb, and a 'fuck-me-they-built-a-road-up-here?' steep climb. Really sets you up for the day...

I was thinking of Mogan, stayed in Maspalomas last time, however you're selling me on Tajeda.
-
• #2441
The good thing about Tejeda is that it's pretty close to the top of the island. You don't have a choice about doing that climb at the end of the day. Not if you want to get home that evening. Plenty of good restaurants too. We went to Maspalomas/Playa del Ingles today to get spares from the bike shop (two new clincher tyres for @Cycliste, spare tub for me). Got in and out ASAP. Looked grim.

Is there anyway to check how good a bond the tubular and glue has got?
My approach was:
3 layers of glue on the rim over 3 days with the final layer pre mounting
2 layers of glue on the tyre pre mountingBit concerned I didn't put enough glue on the tyre for the final round of tyre glue. Was going to race on them this weekend......
-
• #2443
That's plenty. It's only when you come to get the fuckers off that you get a true sense of the integrity of tub glue.
-
• #2444
Cool....looking forward to riding them.
-
• #2445
Those fuckers will never come off the rim lol
-
• #2446
Has anyone rolled a tub ?
I'm perhaps a bit more lax with sticking them on - 1 layer of glue on old rim (two on new 'fresh' rim), one layer on tub, mount. Other times I use Velox tape. No problems so far, but then I'm not descending Alpine passes at 30C+

• #2447
I have clean rims but gluey tubs. Can I (and do I need to) stretch them on my clean rims? Will they just stick right back on a bit??
-
• #2448
I've fitted tubs with latex inners that haven't been stretched without too much trouble. I gather certain makes/types are more difficult.
-
• #2449
The tubs are actually second hand, hence the glue.
I guess I'll be OK.
-
• #2450
I doubt they'd need stretching if they've been fitted previously. Tub glue is a contact adhesive so if you put them on a rim and inflate them, they will probably form a bond.
Thank you. The base tape had been torn in one area and a small triangle of cloth was folded over. I'm pretty sure it was stuck down like that, so I'll try and repair that with Copydex
