  • Did the 10 mile 'walking out of darkness' walk around london with the Mind over Marathon runners and their coaches yesterday. turned out to be more like 12.5 miles so spent around 4.5 hours on my feet. other than some epic blisters it went well and was perfectly timed for the start of my spitfire scramble training as time on feet is going to be key.

    upping my running mileage is coming along very slowly. can run 5k again now but am seriously relying on my weight to plummet in next 9 weeks to make things manageable.

    in other news the forerunner 935 is amazing compared to my old 620. but for the money it bloody well should be.

    next item on the list is to find a decent pair of trail shoes in next few weeks. any recommendations for the current forum favourites.

  • First Parkrun yesterday- did it at Hackney Marshes.

    Absolute game changer as currently I am a reluctant runner and really struggle to push myself on solo efforts. Being part of a group was lovely.

    I really like my inov8 roclites but worth trying out plenty at different stores.

    Also consider terrain as shoes seem very specific. E.g. unless it rains heavy for EfM I'm sure Trail Talons would be better than Roclites, especially as I've sections on roads, budget won't stretch to more trainers at mo tho.

    Salamon Speedcross still seem to be rated as a good all-rounder it seems.

  • Arrived down on bexhill and knew today was going to be a big ask, I've been looking at the forecast 15mph wind straight down the sea front all week and thinking "it can't be that bad" but doing 175bpm on the first lap just to hit marathon pace I knew it would be a big ask and companies with we weather, my running said the second lap would be his last one with me, staring down the barrel of 2 laps and an a good hr of 175 I realises today was either going to end in surrender, a similar time to London or a complete explosion at some point, options 2 and 3 are not appealing to my fragile post London confidence so decided to pull the plug. Feeling about gutted now as it's my first ever dnf, but a quick bike ride and the knowledge I'm now heading to Mallorca this week with fresh rather than trashed legs is consoling me!

  • It wasn't your main goal race of the year, sounds like a wise decision to me. Enjoy the holiday.

  • Great weekend of running for me, am quite pleased.

    I too my mother to Park Run yesterday. Growing up physical exercise was never emphasised growing up. Being part of the new burgeoning black middle class in Zimbabwe, studies were the priority. It was so wonderful to see my mum embracing running. Growing up it was something she did a lot as a child but eventually fell by the wayside. She came in at 46 odd mins which was brilliant and was so encouraged and adamant she'll be back again. Park Run has done wonders in making running such an accessible pastime. Hard to tell what the barrier ever was given it's an inherent extension for most walkers but they have cracked the nut.

    Today I did a fun run, one I'd been meaning to do for a while but happily coincides with my 36th Birthday tomorrow. This might mean to someone who was listening to rap before the Trap Era...

    I agree about parkrun, it is also something I can talk to colleagues about without sounding like a proper running anorak.

    I'm in Scott Kinablue 3.0s and they're really good on both trail and road. Decent on wet meadow grass if you happen to be running across that. Wouldn't trust them on a sloppy up/downhill for much though.

  • they're mostly for spitfire scramble and to do some longish distance walking in (10-20 miles) and while to date it's never rained at spitfire there is a short downhill trail section through some woods which is all mud and if it got wet would be like a waterpark slide in the wrong shoes.

    otherwise the course is a mix of grass, mud, pavement, pebbled roads, dirt trail & muddy woodlands.

    Run was fine, took it easy and came in 23:56.

    Might try to push for a sub 20 next week- I'm not very fit when it comes to running but I have very long legs.

  • ordered a pair of roclite 280 only £50 from sportsshoes.com so worth a punt.

  • 1st and probably last marathon on Sunday. Concerned about fueling. I would usually have a curry and several beers on a Saturday night.
    I take it this is not a good idea, what should I be eating the day, night, morning before to give me the best chance of enjoying it?

  • carbs.

  • Stuff that you've eaten before training runs that hasn't had any adverse affects.
    Drip feed the carbs though the day rather than a massive meal (says the man who hasn't ever run marathon and barely gets over 5k at the moment)

  • I usually go for a homemade veg pizza in the eve and a small bowl of porridge in the morning. Give yourself plenty of time to digest, top up with a small energy bar/bites of a banana in the hour before the race.

  • Carb up for two days before, six smaller meals/day though. Most important carb time is lunch the day before. Hydrate constantly 2 days before, preferably with electrolytes rather than just water.

  • Salient points, will try a combo of all the above. Not at the same time mind.
