Yeah... But he's Mike Hall... And I'm.... Definitely not! :)

I ran Continental X-Kings 29 x 2.4"
Fast rolling tread and wide profile really helped for me. They were quick on asphalt and fine, hard packed gravel, and the extra cushioning really helped on the washboard, which really hammers you, especially in the Gila in NM.
That's what worked for me, but I also rode with, and finished an hour behind Will who rode a cross bike with 38c tyres I think.
Nothing will make the "Rail Trail" in Idaho not shit. 30+ miles of wheel sized undulations in dark volcanic gravel.

Cheers!
I was just asking because I'm about to have a wheel rebuild and can fit 27.5 x 2.8 with room to spare. . .So I was considering a potential switch to plus size. . . But I think I might as well stick with my 29 x 2.4's -

Yeah, they roll better generally than B+. I've been running both B+ and 29" over the last year, prefer 29" for everything except tight technical singletrack. Which there is about 5 miles of on the TD route.

Done deal then. . . New 29er rims it is! :)

Many salsa! Boring choice.
-
• #687
Definitely a lot of 'full package' bag setups this year.
Salsa seems to have the monopoly the last couple of years. -
• #688
Those salsas are shit, press fit BBs, did no-one take note that Jay Petervary's failed the first year he ran it.
-
• #689
you don't need a BB if you have a sail

John Campbell (of Alpine Luddites fame) is doing it right, not a single Shimano/SRAM component on the bike!

Jefe posted a little bit of divide love

Looks like XT brakes to me!

I was going off what he said... https://www.instagram.com/p/BU7O5Rsj5x5/?taken-by=alpine_luddites
Look like TRP brakes but it doesn't really matter, good to see him rocking the rohloff, riding his own kit and a local frame :)

None on my English either since taking the alfine off... I like that. :)

The re-route on the first part of the route is apparently due to a bridge being out. It looks like a suitably tough alternative!
-
• #697
I thought it looked a bit lumpy. :)
Would it mean if someone were to beat Mike's or lael's record it wouldn't count due to the re-routing? -
• #698
It would count, as it is the official route for this year. But a reroute due to Fire further into the race, taking you off the official GPX doesn't count. It's quite vague.
-
• #699
Ah got it. So once the route is set for that year, a record stands even if that route is slightly different to the route the previous record was set on. Cheers.

Seems to be the case yeah. 2015 was the first year it didn't go through Rawlins, WY because of huge road construction south of there into Colorado, now the route stays offroad for the whole of the great basin via Wamsutter, and Matt Lee said this would be a permanent change (as it's a better route).
