I cleaned both stem and bars anyway as I've cured a creak (on another bike) by doing this before. Also noticed the stem had a bit of metal protruding beside one of the threaded holes that takes a bolt from the faceplate, this looked like it has been rubbing the faceplate as there was shiny metal exposed on it do knocked that back with a file and abrasive paper.
So the grease may not have been what cured the creak.
Also, now my bars are quiet I noticed my cranks creak. Fuuuuu....
