  • Yeah - same. I found the riding along sessions ok for short recovery sessions. The visual clues for the workouts work well, as you say. The sounds however are pretty useless combined with a Lemond...

  • Noice cancelling headphones.

  • So do the sounds become useful for training when you can hear them ?

  • No one answered my question about waterproof/sport headphones in the headphone thread.

    Fucking audiophile wankers...

  • You do sports?
Beer drinking is not a sport.

  • surely you just buy sennheiser 600s and replace them when the damp sets in?

  • The way I do it it fucking is!

  • I eat Sennheisers for breakfast.

I posed the question I think on youtube, what mp3 player/headphone combo was Mike Hall using in IPWR?

  • You must sweat lot. I've never had an issue with headphones.

I use apple ones when on the road.
And on the turbo I used some sennheisers mx450s and now some platronics back beat pro

  • I don't use my good headphones, I use cheap earbuds which fall out.
I want slightly less cheap earbuds that don't fall out and don't die if I use them in the rain.

Yes, I also sweat lots. It's about 8.5%ABV

  • They were raving about some £35 ones the other day, maybe try them?

Should be on most recent page.

  • I don't like headphones on the bike - music I like then just reminds me of being on the turbo and I don't want to listen to music I don't like :)

  • I'll check them out, cheers.

  • 100mi TT I seem to recall most people on TTF were saying they were around 80-85% so for a 'ride' I would expect to below that unless it's super hilly and you're smashing your NP up with crazy spikes. It's a bit personal but I'd probably start at 70-75% and see how it feels. If you're feeling fine half way, bump it up a bit, if still fine at 80mi then bump it up again. Then you will know next time to hit out higher or lower depending on how you felt first go.

That still should be pretty quick. If you just wanted to 'get around' then 50-60% and a few cafe stops for the LOLs.

Ta again. My NP for 130miles ended up being 70% of FTP and was plenty comfy. Some bike fit issues, and didn't keep on track of hydration at one point, but otherwise really enjoyed it

  • I've got an A race in 2 weeks which is a '25 TT. I'd been tapering until this morning for a '10, but not sure how to balance maintenance and easing up for something 15 days away. Was thinking of the last two weeks of the TR specialty programme, but supplementing as many of the sessions for outdoor (definitely the tempo rides). The last week is a reduction in training load over the previous so there's some in-built taper.

Or is it far too late to do anything useful, and I can just do short, intense sessions every other day till the day before?

  • Too late now I know, but I probably wouldn't of tapered for the 10 with an a race two weeks after it. If your using training peaks or similar, did you taper to a positive TSB for the 10 ?

It used to be said that it takes two weeks for any adaptations from training to develop. No idea how true this actually is though, what's the current thinking ?

  • Today was a target race up in Hull so definitely glad I tapered a bit! Sitting at CTL of 100 and TSB 23 (highest freshness since October).

  • I'd focus on riding in position and getting used to pushing through the lactic rather than worrying about making any gains between now and then.

I don't think any of those sessions would hurt but not can't see much benefit of anything too structured between now and your race.

  • My taper for a 10 or 25 is to try not to smash Friday's commute and don't do a 300k audax on Saturday.

  • If I had a tsb of 23. I think I'd struggle to do 5 minutes at desired power. Fresh.

  • Anyone tried Xert ? Put my data into it to have a look after this DC Rainmaker post about it
    https://www.dcrainmaker.com/2017/03/xert-training-platform-in-depth-review.html

The concept of MPA seems interesting, and I like how it presents the data with different 'Focus' types. Not sure how based in science any of it actually is though, can't seem to see any studies that validates their approach.

  • A cautionary tale for those who are convinced getting old means getting slow.

5 years ago I was 40 and I set my best ever time for Layhams just after spending 4 months doing intervals and weight training and training with a powermeter to race some crits as a personal challenge. Never really been near that time since in about 20 rides up there and ditched the powermeter as I was convinced that was the best fitness I was ever going have on a bike and at my age it would all turn to shit from then on.

This Saturday I went out nearly a stone heavier than I was in 2012 but having ridden alot more this year with way more climbing than I have ever done before and no powermeter any more and I took a fucking minute off that time.

This seems to have required >20% higher power than the 2012 effort. This is mental.
