Whilst the bleakness of the original had its charm in a Pripyat-kinda way, it's looking better now. Great job - when are you getting a greenhouse and how many water butts do you have?

We threw together a cold frame from the remains of that shed and next door's glass tv stand, and yes, we have two water butts.

The flat that I'm renting has a huge tarmac car park at the back. The other half & myself really wanted a nice area to enjoy & attempt to grow some veggies. We made planters & benches out of pallets & now have a bright & cheery space to enjoy.

Gardening peeps!
We've inherited a lovely garden with the place we've bought but haven't had to actively garden in the last 13 years and even then, it was in NZ where everything pretty much grew all year round. I've now got most of the tools I need for maintenance. The garden includes some lovely specimens including a bottle brush, a large Oliander (sp?), one established Hydrangea (which I've dead headed), a fern and nice and huge Rosemary plant. We've spent the long weekend at Ruxley Manor and Polhill garden centres (spent a shit load!) and have purchased a climbing rose, a bushy rose, 2 more Hydrangeas and some more alpine style plants for the rock garden. Dude who used to live here clearly understood the seasons as there's many bulbs coming up at the moment. Anyone know what this is? About up to much knee and about to flower.
I'm now decidedly middle age and I fucking love gardening. Keep your pics coming as I love to see what everyone is doing. I really like your garden @oat44, I really need to let go of the urge to trim everything to be perfect to get a more country garden vibe happening. I need some pots I think!

Your unidentified plants about to flower are Irises.

Loving the double shed action too.

It looks like an iris but it would be quite ahead as they generally start in May.
Edit: andyp beat me to it!

Ours now, this spring's changes mostly clearing the left patch (came home last night to new path and dinosaur ridge made from the random stuff dug up from the back last year, which is nice), and cutting down the ludicrous grape vine.
The patch on the right currently covered in forget-me-nots. Will they stop other things coming up? There's lots of other wildflower seeds in there, bit worried that they're smothered.

Ours are about to flower too

Looks nice and sunny; loads of potential there.

Yup, Spanish bluebells (although scented so hybrid). I've let them flower but thinking I'll pull them up after. They certainly are aggressive - feels like three as many as last year!

Thought I'd share a tree / big bush suggestion. We have a yellow magnolias tree, not sure of the exact model.
But I'd thoroughly recommend one. They flower early, before they bare leaves, so it adds early colour in a pretty cool way.
Not my image but sort of gives a flavour

Very nice, good effort!

Something fucking dug into my turf last night. Two small holes and a shit (at least within reach so I could grab it without stepping on the turf). Turf is pretty tough, so guessing it was a fox.

I reckon it was aram

Hadn't thought about that. It would take strong, but not particularly long, arms to make a hole like that...

I don't know if you have a cat but irises (and most lilies in general) and cats do not mix. The pollen and all the other parts are toxic but the pollen once on them ends up licked off and in them and affects their kidneys apparently. Death is usually 3 to 6 days later. Just FYI.

was going to ask you about the turf. Feeling a little guilty about the amount of watering necessary in the first two weeks.
-
• #1623
Ha, beyond environmental guilt, are you on a metered tariff yet?
How often you at it? I'm going twice a day for the first week, although I've read some say once is enough.

Can't seem to upload a pic from this morning. It's green. I think it's growing. So far so good?
