Mudflaps are great. Yesterday's ride had a lot more mud than I anticipated (a good surprise). Tires got covered in filth, every time I transitioned from mud to asphalt the bike became a scatter gun of mud, shooting all directions. A lot of fun. This morning I put the bike on the bath for cleaning (small flat life), this is the situation pre-cleaning:
Drivetrain: clean
Underside: clean
Front fork: filthy
I didn't have a splash on me, feet included. Mudguard is Specialized "plug and play", with quite elegant hidden fittings, but extremely short on the rear. Results in a giant mudflap that can occasionally touch the tyre. In total I've got three flaps, one behind bottom bracket. Reflective panel is a bonus too.

And this is the bike mid-ride

I've been saying 'this is the year of the mudflap' for about 5 years now.
But this really is the year of the mudflap.

I've been saying this is the year of the "OTP Hybrid bike with TT bars" for longer than that. Statistically speaking, eventually I'll be right. A million monkeys and a million typewriters, etc.

Asked in fbnpna before I found this excellent thread but anyway:
What are your opinions on mudguard size that'll work with 650b, i.e. has anyone successfully used mudguards designated as 26" or 700c size for a 650b 35mm tyre? Don't want to splash out on guards and get crappy 'fender line' as compass and VO call it. I know there's 650b specific guards but obvs more/less expensive options for 26" & 700c.

559mm (mountain bike) is closer in size t0 584mm (650B) than 622mm (700c). Are you using plastic or metal fenders?

Thanks. A bit meh aesthetically but solid stuff, have a pair on a 700c bike.

Anyone running 38mm tyres under 45mm guards?
-
• #2762
yes, 40 in fact a bit of side spray but aesthetically much pleasing

I'm running 37mm paselas under 45mm guards.

Good news, are those metal VOs or SKS, or something else?

Handsome Cycles Mud Butlers. Very similar to VO's:

Those look ace, I am leaning towards painted metal too, but unfortunately need 650b (I know they would go with a little bending, but what's the point when correct sizes are available)

Drilled and tapped my track ends to fit some chromoplatics on my rumrunner a couple of weeks ago. Had some clearance issues on the fork so had to downsize the front tire to 25mm which is a compromise. Used polymorph to attach the clip near my bb, secured with a trusty cable tie. Riding in the rain is a much less soggy affair now and I don't have to worry about race blades working themselves loose and dramatically flying into my spokes.

Need solution for Merida cyclocross bike - used as commuter. Anyone used SKS Beavertails? Will they be shit? Look like:

I know this has probably been covered a thousand times but what experience do people have fitting full 'guards with mini-vs. Are there any that don't require you to cut/burn a hole for the brake?
-

I have 45mm pdw guards with mini-vs on my cross-check. There's sometimes a bit of rub but never needed any material removed. Worked fine with sks before that too.

Good work, looks alright too. You've put the front qr stay thingy on the rear though!

After a set of 30mm pdws if anyone has some surplus to requirements?
-
• #2773
Thanks, it came out cleaner than expected. The idea is tuggable release in case of puncture. Rather than dismantling the whole assembly. Not really worried about debris in the front guard from city road riding so it made sense to me.

I am about to try this very thing, just waiting for the guards to arrive. SKS Longboard 45mm, Tektro RX5 mini-v, 35mm Continental CycloCross Speed tyres on a Bombtrack Arise. Will update with success/failure.

I had the 45mm Chromoplastics on my Pomp with the same RX5s and 32mm Marathon Plus's and they worked fine - the rubber accordian (?) between the arms on the Mini V's wasn't much use as it rubbed a little on top of the guard so I got rid.
Any suggestions for a front mudguard for the cyclist who has toe overlap? I guess something frame mounted to protect feet and frame from spray, and then something seperate, perhaps bolted behind front brake caliper, to cover the bit in front, to stop spray coming up and over the front?
Am happy to bodge something but I'm struggling for creativity. It's a fixed gear bike so any more overlap from what there is now would be dangerous.
