  • Im gna be off bike still for at least another month, and am now back in full time, need to be in office work.

I cannot make heads and tails of tfl capping vs travelcards. My commte is balham to camden. 3 to 2 via zone 1 so hitnthe zones 1-3. For simplicity say i never leave 1-3.

It seems to cost £6.60 a day just getting the tube, but being off bike and not being able to walk far ive been using the tube and buses a fair bit in the evenings and weekends.

Whats the cheapest option? Is just carrying on using the 1 contactless card more or less equivaent?

  • Whats the cheapest option?

Walking, but that's 4 extra hours a day you lose. Running would make it probably 'only' 2h lost

£1.50 each way on the bus, but at ~1h20 each way that's an extra 1h40 each day you lose and it's probably not much slower to run - 7.5 miles each way, so about what, an hour and a half?

7 day z1-3 travelcard is £7.74/day if you only use it weekdays. If you make a £5.70 journey each weekend then it breaks even with PAYG

You could save £2 a day or so by running from Elephant & Castle I reckon. It's 3.5 miles to Camden Town.

Then again, if you're off the bike maybe running's out of the picture too?

  • The contactless card automatically caps at day/week travelcard if they work out cheaper. A monthly travelcard may work out about £20 cheaper if you're using the tube heavily every day.
