  • Have been considering n+1 for my commute (20k each way) and find myself unable to make a decision, so though I'd ask the fountain of all knowledge/opinions - the internet!

    Requirements

    • large frame size (I'm 6'7, BB to top of saddle is 92cm)
    • fixed (ideally with horizontal or rocker dropouts)
    • disc brakes (front and back)
    • big tyres (+28c) and mud guards
    • ideally steel

I currently use a Pearson Touché with a disc brake on the front and 23cc tyres, but with the roads covered in s**t and bits missing the commute isn't much fun, especially when greasy.

I've been looking at the Cotic Roadrat (budget option) or All City Nature Boy Disc 853 (premium), any other ideas?

  • nature boy disc (non 853)

  • What types of roads? Urban/rural/smooth/gash/hilly/phl4tt?

  • Urban, not very hilly (fine with 48x16 on 700cc), lots of gutters/poorly swept cycle lanes.

Current route is from Cheam, up cycle superhighway 7 to Tottenham Court Road.

    phl4tt?

  • Marin Nicosio as an even more budget option?

  • Talbot Path Racer

  • I've got a Cotic Roadrat (Small, which is halfway between M/L sized Escapade). It's super flexible, rides well, can be a little flexy under heavy loads (30kg+) or stamping on the pedals but would completely recommend it as a commuter. I've ridden mine for over a year of 32mile/day.

  • Haha yeah. "Flat".

Can't suggest anything other than what's been proposed though.

  • Do you use flats or drops? Worried it might be a bit long.

  • This page makes me doubt the Roadrat, given my height it would only be worse https://www.lfgss.com/conversations/281564/#comment12777527

Looks like it will have to be a Nature Boy

  • Keeping this up to date, short list of bikes is:

    All City Nature Boy Disc
    Cotic Roadrat (probably too compact)
    Soma Wolverine
    Surly Straggler (probably too long)

    Now to find one!

  • genesis day one disc?

  • The all city nature boy 853 looks awesome, but you could have the genesis complete for less and upgrade when you break stuff ;)

Personally I'd go all city, especially as it looks more Chucky and will look less like a farm gate in your size!

  • Good shout, not sure why I discounted (probably the compact geometry).

  • Has this been resolved yet?

  • No, watching the classifieds and eBay for anything.

  • subbed..i popped in balfes bike on the way home to ask about the day 1 .pretty solid bike..the chap did say the cotic did have a high front end..

i was probably asking the un-asked..whether you can get flip flip disc wheelset....possible?

  • Trying to avoid eccentric bottom brackets

  • There aren't a lot of disc + single speed wheel sets available off the shelf. Certainly none with flip-flop functionality (not possible).

  • You can thread a freewheel on a fixed thread though so as long as you've got a lockring tool, a freewheel tool and a lock whip you can have both. Just not as quick as flipping it round

  • Yeah, I have a freewheel on a fixed thread its fine.

  • Thanks. Im opting for the day one just because its complete

  • The build begins!

They don't allow bikes in the office, this is not a bike, just a box, probably contains papers or something, definitely not a bike.
