It saddens me to say it will have an adapter rather than a proper rad ti quill
Plenty of black quill stems and bars floating around, no ?

if you don't want to shell out for a ti quill you could always source a steel one. Imo itm eclypses are pretty cool, and the 3t pro chrome as well (I'm sure there are more!)
But yeah a black quill could be an idea for a more stealthy vibe...
Or silver quill, seatpost and chain rings to offset the all black of the group...? choices choices :)
Any thoughts on wheels?

with some carbon
It saddens me to say it will have an adapter rather than a proper rad ti quill
Why not a carbon fork with real ahead stem then?
Nice frame!

Oooooo dis gon be good!

Beaut. I'm reassured by your choice of components/cheap crabons.

The wheels aren't anything too interesting, just what I had on my old bike. I'm afraid this project is under pretty significant financial constraints - the student loan only goes so far :(.
I've already ordered a crabon seatpost, inspired by @Flandria's Diamant, and there might be a saddle following.
In an ideal world I would go full matching titanium stuff, which I figure would work well with the wheels too. As things stand I've already got the full cockpit from my old bike ready to go, and going for a quill would mean new bars + new bar tape + ballache of rewrapping bars.

(probably quite underwhelming) sneak peaks...

I very nearly bought one of those 1" threadless carbon ones of ebay, but I realized all the associated costs would mount up. It also seems like a shame to get rid of such a pretty fork....

Epic frame, looks a lot like my olmo minus the chrome. I'm sure it'll look great with black 105!

Okay, so it's beginning to look more like a bike. There was a hairline crack around the top of the seatstay which I noticed while I was putting the new seatpost in. Since the paint around that area was already pretty ratty I decided to sand it back a little to check it wasn't anything serious - thankfully, I'm pretty confident it was just a paint crack. I asked to LBS too and they said they couldn't be sure without stripping the whole seat cluster back, but that if it was a crack it would make a hell of a lot of noise before it really packs in.
fingers crossed.
Also, I could use some advice on cable routing. Do I need the cable outer to run all the way through the toptube, or is it okay to just have it going into the entrance/exit ports with exposed inner cable running through the tube? Sheldon/Google gave me nothing on this :(

Looking awesome already!
Got a pic of the potential crack?
-
• #13
There's no cable stop in the internal routing is there? Most steel frames with internal top tube routing will take a full length of outer I think.
-
• #14
agreed. how it is fed through in the first picture looks correct

If you ever need to get rid, I'll take your hand off.

2nd dibs hand, pending pics

Depends βΒ my Rourke had outer stops in the internal routing inserts ...
It'll be fairly obvious because either the outer will or won't go in.
Really nice build !

@%~} and @alialias duly noted (subject to pics)
@PhilDAS yeah looking at it now I'm pretty certain your meant to run out all the way through, which is slightly annoying since it means I need to recable the rear brake :(
Will try and post a piccy of the potential crack tomorrow. In other news I've also kindly been offered a threadless carbon fork. Looming overdraft tells me no, but the scales scream yes. π¬

Thanks. That Rourke reassures me that a quill adapter wasn't a bad decision!
-
• #20
Hint; it's actually 1" threadless with just barely enough steerer βΒ which will explain the stupid slammed / inverted stem.
ahem you should buy 1" carbon forks ahem

for example this one. altough i like it a lot with the original forks, but adapter instead of quill is a big no. why do people see cabling and wrapping bars as something that bad?
-
• #22
Cabling is tough if you haven't got good clippers!
+1 for keeping the og forks

@hma it isn't solely a hatred of cable cutting or bar wrapping, it was more a matter of cost:
Quill stem + bars + bar tape + headset > headset + adapter
I think once I've dialed the fit in and I'm happy with everything else I'll ditch the adapter and try and source a cockpit that resembles this.
In all likelihood I'll keep the fork. The one on offer isn't threaded which would further postpone cockpit plans.
@MCamb So true. These have very nearly been hurled through a window in rage on too many occasions. Whoever gave them 5 stars needs a slap.

i get it, but the mizuno fork would let you keep current bar/stem setup with just a shim (1" to 1.1/8") and you'd have a bigger selection of bars in OS diameter. you'd have to change the headset, yes, but i'm sure someone on the forum could help you out with a nice threadless one.

really lovely frame.
Discovered this via the eBay finds thread and I couldn't say no to that fade. The paint is pretty ratty in places but everything else is absolutely fine. I'm gonna take the easy/obvious allblackeverything route with 105 and outfit it with some carbon goodies from china.
It saddens me to say it will have an adapter rather than a proper rad ti quill, but I might see to rectifying that in the future.
