Ease of navigation? It's not as if he's trying to staying as close as he can to the coast.
I'm sure it will be good prep for the huge amount of shit roads he'll have to deal with on his RTW ride.
I didn't mind the short bit of the A3052 I did (Seaton to the turn off for Aylesbeare) on the K&SW600 although I was quite fucked at that point (it was ~15km from the end).
He missed out on the Fowey ferry though. Fool.

If he followed the coast down here, he would have taken much better roads, he stuck to the horrible A3052. Single lane, windy and packed with grockles over the holidays.
