Dynamo Lights

  • I use that light with the rubber seatpost mount between the stays. I've not seen it mounted on a stay but there's no reason not to so long as it doesn't foul with your saddle bag.

  • That's what I was going to suggest and is inspiration for my Rourke build. Need to work out the mount - thinking of 3d printing something (I know nothing about 3d printing)

  • Anyone have experience with dynamo lights off road? I want to try on my SSMTB but all accounts seem to be the same that on twisty single-track/climbing they aren't bright enough.
Do you just supplement with a helmet light?
Thinking of the b+m iq-x, have one on my road bike and I like it, don't want to shell out for revo/k-lite.

  • I've used a supernova triple pro and a supernova hub off road for a couple of years. It still works the same as the day I got it, and it has been through some miserable mud and water, so it is very reliable.
The problem though is the flickering beam below about 4 mph, which on a muddy single track climb was a pretty big issue for me. I have added a decent helmet light now (Exposure joystick), and switch that on whenever I know I am about to need it.
In practice the two work very well, as I don't run through the battery in the helmet light ever, the dynamo light produces enough light (it is amazingly bright and wide angle) for well over 75% of the time.
Sadly it all cost loads of money.

  • Cheers! That sounds how I thought to be honest, I have a dynamo wheel already so may splash out for a MagicShine helmet light and an Iq-X dynamo light.

  • I used a Hope to supplement the dyno when moving too slow to power it.

  • Seems my cable is broken. What is the Exposure Revo charging cable connectors called and where can I get a cable around 1m please?

  • "prototype Sinewave Cycles dynamo... features a very bright beam, USB charging, and a unique battery power mode where the light can be provided additional power from a standard cache battery which allows for substantial light output at low speeds and while stopped. Dynamo lighting typically flickers and dims at low speeds, but with a battery backup the light remains bright even when walking the bike up a steep grade or churning through the sand at 3mph."

  • Noticed that in the Alpkit sale linked in the bikepacking thread that their Love Mud dynamo, which looks like a rebadged SP PD-8* to me, is available for £59.

Thought it might be of interest!

*Does anyone know if it is actually that, or just a copy?

  • Which lights can be mounted either way up?
My new ogre may or may not get a 24pack rack from time to time so being able to swap between fork crown and under rack mounting would be nice. Bright enough for off roading would be a bonus.

In the short term will just be borrowing my edelux I off my lht but something nice for the future would be nice.
    SON hub obvs.

  • I think the newest top end B&M light had that feature

  • Yea the IQ-X does this in a pretty neat way. http://www.peterwhitecycles.com/b&m-hl.php

  • Perfect. Thanks y'all.
    That's such an obvious solution.

  • It's not an E3 but tail lights are so small and lightweight custom mounts are easily made,

  • 'easily made'

I might have to ask you to prove that once I get my lights situation sorted!

    Happy to pay of course.

  • I made one in about 15 mins with just a piece of brass pipe, a drill, hammer and a file. Have a look at my Genesis thread

  • Another light mount related question. I want to mount my supernova on the crown, but my carbon fork only has a whole at the back, not the front. Are there any premade solutions that will act as extender? Ie - bolt a bracket into the back, which curves round to the front of the fork where my light will sit?

  • A while ago @Hulsroy made himself this to hold his mudguard. I don't see why something similar couldn't be made to hold a light.

  • Interesting - is there any danger in having the metal round the carbon steerer?

  • You have a headset don't you? Pop it under the crownrace to hold it in place

  • You should definitely sand the edges smooth!

  • I'm not convinced that something like that would be strong enough to hold a relatively beefy light, and I'm a bit worried that if it were any bigger it'd mess around with the headset.
