  • Anyone running Avid brakes without the pita 'tri-align' washers?

    The disc tabs on the back of my Humuhumu are ones that I added and I forgot that the previous setup, an FSR sharkfin adapter, required me to install some extra washers under the tri-align ones to space the caliper out a bit so I've basically welded the tab on in slightly the wrong position.

    However, with the next size up is/post adapter and no tri-align washers everything fits nicely and since the convex washers on the bb7 on the front of my Day One cracked and fell out the other day I'm kinda thinking missing them might be a good idea. I have access to facing tools if I wanted to go down that route but even without facing the caliper seems to be aligned to the rotor pretty well.

  • fucking RS685 front has just gone to shit. pads are quite worn so will change those and give a re-bleed, but due to how quickly performance has fallen off since my last ride a week ago I get the feeling that the caliper is fucked grrrrr grrrrrrrrrrrr. only had it a year!!

    what are the best bleed kits for RS685? would be helpful if it was the same as MTB but guess it isnt

    edit: anyone know the warranty period for the RS685 levers and caliper? already had the rear caliper replaced on warranty, guys at LBS said they have returned shit loads and if it happens to the front they may be able to get a set of DAs to replace

  • Quad pots are awesome. Do you need it for road riding? No.

    Try riding a quad pot MTB/Hybrid bike for your commute and you'll know why.

  • I just got one off ebay. Well, just ordered one. I'll let you know what it's like although since I 'manually intervened' the front caliper has been fine. No rain to fill it with shit/wear it down either.

    DAs aren't out yet I don't think so you might be waiting some.

    180 rotors was the lower end for competitive riders and 205 is pretty much standard nowadays.

    How can they have too much power? It's not like they're going to bend a rotor is it? It's just a question of 'can I apply these enough to slow down rapidly, without immediately exceeding tyre grip?'

  • why is my RS785 caliper different from the ones advertised on websites? a sort of recessed bleed screw? although it seems that this isnt actually the bleed port according to shimano tech docs

  • Power is at 11 out of 10 obvs.

    Yes - this is how they've made them compatible with the existing shimano leavers. If the surface area was larger you'd get weird(er) lever throw and modulation issues assuming the distance the pads have to travel to hit the rotor is the same.

    Also - the size of the pad is what is dictating the bite, not the amount of pots, although the later kinda defines the former. Again assuming everything else is equal.

  • Yeah, I don't really see the issue of 1, 2, 4 pots. If they've designed them taking into account the master cylinder size in the lever then all should be good.

    I doubt there's much you've not seen before.

  • You can use a hose with syringe attached (IIRC) but be careful as mine fell off and pissed fluid everywhere.

    It's a weird design choice and was my first experience of setting up/bleeding hydro brakes.

    Helped my mate build his SRAM Rival disc bike more recently and that's got sensible screw on hoses and syringes which are a lot neater and less prone to popping off for no reason.

    It should be noted that I'm a rank amateur, so maybe proper mechanics don't have the same idiot problems that I do.

  • Just noticed the tech doc for my new XT rotors shows that they come with a fixing washer.

    But neither of them came with one, they had the tightening plates though. Did they change the design or something?
