I've toured twice last year, total of about 1200 miles, with ortlieb front panniers and the wider rack. To note, it is already narrower than minoura and (I think) soma.
There is a knack to getting the panniers on but I wouldn't say it was something that bothered me. As you can see, there is plenty of room between the platform and the panniers. I'd definitely recommend the wider as I've used a narrower platformed rack on tour before but the top was nowhere near as useful.
Problem with soma is its afaia its one piece so difficult to fit into a bike box for flights etc. Pelago packs flat.

How many kilos have you had on it? I feels like mine starts to flex a little when I put my backpack with computer and school stuff on it.
-

I've had about 8-10 kilos plus water on it. There is maybe a little flex but barely noticeable. If you skip to 6 minutes there is some footage of descending col d'aubisqe, you can see I was confident in the setup - only flex that was an issue came from the (carbon) forks.

Nice! I think I'll go through all the bolts to see if they're tightened properly.
Also, killer descent by the looks of it! -

good bike control at 7.18...

I bought a vavert advancer rack with some vavert mudguards for my pub bike a couple of years ago from planet x. The whole point of the bike was to be as cheap as possible and the rack and guards were 30 quid (I think the rack was £12.99). The pub hack now get more use than any of my other bikes and both rack and mudguards are holding up great.
I had to use p clips to fit the rack but it's been solid, even helped to mop up the last bits from a house move.

Trying to find a simple/cheap solution. My little buddy (11 yrs old) rides this bike to/from school and loves it. It hasn't got mounts for anything. What's the best solution rack-wise so he can carry a bit of extra stuff (in addition to a backpack).
Front pelago rack is an option but it's a bit pricey. Any other options? Front or rear...

Options are limited if you want a cheaper front one probably Minoura Gamoh or a Metro Porteur. Cheapest would be a Wald 137 at 30 quid, would attach easily too. BLB will do some cheap stuff but personally I never recommend anything from them.

I'd suggest a wald too but I imagine those bars are fairly narrow so check a wald will fit between them before going for that option. With vintage carbon forks I'm not 100% sure a front rack is the best option though. I know it's not cool but a seatpost mounted rear rack might work
or there's this which attaches to the headtube
from Flying Dutchman Bikes
188 Eversholt Streetbut looking carefully I'm not sure that'd fit either

Yeah, that's my worry about the front fork too.
Any seatpost mounted rear racks you'd vouch for? anyone have one going spare they want to sell?
Tortec has one.
Ebay unknown branded but it mounts to the seat stays.

New Soma Demi Porteur Rack looks great:
ideal of you wanted something like a surly 24 pack but down have fork crown eylets, also I like the bag support. I wonder when you'll be able to get it here and how much it'll be?
-
• #364
does he need a rack, or just a bikepacking bag?
-
• #365
he just sometimes needs to be able to carry some extra 'stuff' -- clothes/kit etc.

Get an Alpkit Airlok Dual then, cheap enough, 2 sizes, rolls from both ends to shrink it and easily attaches to bars.

Is there a budget alternative to the pelago commuter? I was considering the Metro Porteur but it would be useful occasionally if i could put panniers on the front.
Doesn't need to be a large front platform either - the medium Pelago is probably ideal, it's just a bit more than i want to spend. -

Porteur rack and modified shopping basket = win

I did that on my shopper. Zip ties and old inner tubes are a perfect combination for a more permanent installation.

I'm really confused, I have used both zip ties and old inner tube here.

Hi, I've recently bought one of these kona paddywagon 3 http://www.konaworld.com/paddy_wagon_3.cfm bikes for commuting and going to the shops. I'd like to fit a front rack to it, I like that specialized pizza rack but it wont fit as there are no mid fork mounts.
It could be attached to the mudguard mount or the axle, I have a front u brake and a SKS race blade fitted.
What rack would fit my bike? I've seen those pelago racks are popular but I don't want to remove my front brake.
Thanks

It depends if you want to attach panniers on the side or not - if so a Pelago or Soma Porteur would do it. You could also potentially fit a Specialized pizza rack by using P-clips in place of mid-fork mounts as you have a steel fork on the front. Also it's worth saying that all of these racks fit in the same way behind the brake, and work with the brake in place (you have to take the brake off to mount the rack though).
If you're not so bothered about mounting panniers, something like the Metro porteur has a similar function but is over half the price of a Pelago https://www.velovitality.co.uk/products/metro-porteur-steel-front-rack-silver

Thanks kimchi, that rack looks like what I'm after. I don't think I'd need panniers but I'll have a think, really I'd just be using it for grocery shopping and taking my work bag.
Are p clips better than jubilee clips? Currently the mudguard is attached to the fork http://www.wiggle.co.uk/sks-raceblade-pro/?lang=en&curr=GBP&dest=1&sku=5360762139&kpid=5360762139&utm_source=google&utm_term&utm_campaign=UK_PLA_Components&utm_medium=base&utm_content=mkwid%7CsnR312i0d_dt%7Cpcrid%7C67090789262%7Cpkw%7C%7Cpmt%7C%7Cprd%7C5360762139uk
