  • Will I notice any difference between a 5500 or 7710 octalink BB?

You will if you buy the wrong 5500, as it will destroy your cranks. As long as you get the v1, you won't notice the difference

Is the 7710 worth the extra €30?

    Probably not

Is the 7700 worth more again?

Definitely yes if you like beautiful things. What's not to like about an adjustable, tunable, rebuildable BB with needle rollers for radial loads and angular contact balls for axial loads?

  • A friend is organising a hen-do and is a bit stuck, so I thought I'd try and crowdsource some ideas for geographic locations.

In the UK (at least for now) Edinburgh and Bath seem to rank top. Outside Dublin or Prague are obvious options. Anyone got any other suggestions for where you can fly to sub-2hrs and is a laugh in a big group?

    Cheers.

The dent it makes in your wallet

    But yeah...shiny

  • What are some other decent steel frame brands that have rad paint, ride well and won't cost the earth? Not much out there in my size for Somec or Serotta. Not sure where else to look.

  • Which flavour of Cannondale CAAD will fit PDW mudguards and 25c tyres?

Who has one for sale in 50 or 52, rim brake version?

  • Go on the website, scroll to the bottom, click menu

  • I found Prague the worst place for stag/hen.

Stag-do last year turned violent when a group of Englishmen seen me wearing my Northern Ireland football top with Healy on the back. That goal from 2005 clearly still hurt. Started out as banter and we chatted in a few bars all night, once we made our way back to the hotel they followed and simply wanted to fight.

Amsterdam has been the best so far. Flights and hotel for the week <£350. Rented bikes and explored the city in no time. 10/10 would do again

  • Tallinn was lovely for my mate's stag. It's a really nice place, small, friendly, cheap, really interesting guided bike tour. We hired an apartment for not much through AirBnB which slept all of us and was right in the centre.

  • Hi !

I have Campagnolo Athena brifters (3*11). Can I go with a compact crancks ?

I assume the left brifter have just more positions and if I adjust the front derailleur, I can stop it for just 2 chainrings.

    Am I right ?

    thx :)

  • Cheers for the tips.

Amsterdam sounds like a would be good idea, and not too pricey from the looks of it.

  • Just spend all the money on coke and go to your local.

  • Google is failing me. I'm looking for confirmation on chainsets...

SRAM Force 22 road and SRAM Force 22 Cyclocross - Same thing but with different sized rings?
SRAM Force 1 X-Sync - Different cranks to the above with a different chainline?

I'm after a singlespeed set up with a 47.5mm chainline. I believe that the outer ring of a Force 22 chainset will give me that. A Force 1 chainset won't, but I read that the X-Sync ring shifts the chainline. My thought was to buy a Force 22 crankset and put a 46t 110BCD ring on the outer lugs. But an X-sync chain would be nice, though not if that gives a different chainline to a flat track ring. And is there a preferred 110BCD 46t singlespeed/track ring?

  • Or more simply put, what's the best crank option (from anyone, though want to avoid Shimano) for an All City Nature Boy running a White Industries 135mm spaced fixed gear disc brake hub?

  • Google is failing me

Google "SRAM frame fit specifications pdf". There are dimensioned diagrams which will answer your questions.

  • Thank you. I can't tell you how many times I've looked at that pdf over the last week. But that was when I was worrying about chainline itself (which it doesn't give), not relative positions of ring mounts.

  • I was looking for something like this a while ago. Concordes come up in nice colours and biggish sizes now and again and don't cost the earth.

  • chainline itself (which it doesn't give)

I'm never quite sure whether it does or not. The dimension looks like it's to the inner face of the teeth as it's drawn, but the numbers seem more consistent with being the centreline. If you're using derailleur chain, it's close enough. You don't need an XSync ring for fixed/SS, since the chain is neither flapping around nor approaching the ring from an angle.

  • I assumed that the distance to the inside of the ring must be a way off, or taken with a pinch of salt, when thinking about chainline purely because the W3 number for the Omniums is 37mm for a chainline of 42mm. But I don't know if you could add 5mm to the rest of the listed figures and be confident in having an accurate chainline.

I never thought it would be so difficult to get this working.

I know that the X-Sync technology isn't necessary, but I did think that a track/SS specific chainring would be a good idea running fixed/free. They still have tall teeth, right? Would you be comfortable running fixed gear using a stock 46t Force cross ring?

  • Pretty much anything Italian, no? I'd look for the likes of Olmo, Tommasini, Ciocc, Scapin, Casati, Grandis et al, i.e. the lesser known brands that you don't pay the Colnago/Pinarello/De Rosa type premium for.

  • Exactly the kind of list I needed. Know all the names, but not them together.

  • I am after some m6 bolts to use with hexlox and they have to be magnetic but all I can find online is stainless .. where do I get ones that will be magnetic?

  • What sort of head are you after?

http://www.clerkenwellscrews.com will no doubt have something which would work and you may be able to go in person if you're in London?

Otherwise as long as it's not something special head wise then Halfords/B&Q/Wickes/Maplins/etc. usually have smaller packs like so: http://www.halfords.com/workshop-tools/garage-equipment/fuses-electricals-fixings/halfords-socket-cap-screws-m6-x-20mm-hfx253
