  • I'd love Ala to take this actually.

  • Kwia won't mug him, surely?

  • :(

  • Magnificent race

  • Kwia won't mug him, surely?

    o

  • Well deserved win by Kwia

  • Pfff

  • Kwiato was still 22-1 before cresting Poggio.

  • Brilliant finish.

  • Great finish. Would have been great to see Alaphillipe win.

  • I love Sagan and he makes these races. But I can't help but cheer for him to be beaten. What a rider though.

  • A Brilliant brilliant race. Great sportsmanship from Sagan.

  • Yeah I'm the same way, just don't want him winning everything! Surprised Kwia pulled it off, but he was able to follow that magnificent surge of Sagan's and both he and Akaphillipe pulled on the flat. 300k is a great leveller but you would still put the house on Sagan winning from those three.

  • I'm wondering whether Sagan

    • did too much work on the Poggio,
    • started the sprint too early or
    • just needed to go at that distance in the last km to be able to reach is max speed.

For the rest of the final he played it amazingly cool

  • Iconic image

  • Freibe called it on Twitter

Sagan not fastest or best in long races, isn't most likely to win in break, doesn't have strongest team. And yet... mobile.twitter.com/searchhhh/stat…

As I said 300k is a great leveller, and Sagan definitely burnt too many matches on the Poggio, also did the majority of work on the flat

  • I did ask him if he saw the Worlds last year.

But of course Sagan is beatable, and Kwiatkowski does seem to know how to do it.

  • Yeah I thought that. They've been trading blows since the juniors right? A lot of respect for each other which showed at the end. Two great riders: Kwia's not as showy as Sagan and has a different skill set but is prodigeously talented. The two favourites going into Tour of Flanders now surely.

  • Also should give props to Sky. Despite the crapfest they are in they ride a brilliant race unusually for them. They were the biggest team after the Cipressa, seven riders I think, they massed but stayed back and let other teams pace set between it and the Poggio, then surged to the front just as the road went up. Dumoulin went past them and set a ferocious pace and they just followed to his obvious frustration, with Viviani in tow. Dumoulin pulled off, the pace dropped, Sagan attacked and they went plan B and Kwia followed. It was very well executed.

  • Swoon.

Wish I'd put money where my mouth was.

  • I believe Kwiatkowski is missing the cobbled classics this year, he's aiming for the Ardennes instead.

  • Really? I would have thought Flanders would suit his strengths

  • Yep, me too. But he's down to ride Pais Vasco next, followed by the Ardennes. It's hard to do both, so maybe he felt he has a better chance at the latter (and likely Sky's full support) so chose them.

  • What a finish
