  • Good mod that is.
Trying to find a nice way to carry my S4 Evo standard Krypto, at the moment it sits nicely on the rear rack, but gets in the way of bottle cages if carried in the front triangle.

Might like to take the rack off in the summer so looking into "hanging" the boat anchor elsewhere.

@GA2G not a primary but this must be a contender for Secondarys, 14mm shackle, double deadlock, http://www.kryptonitelock.com/content/kryt-us/en/products/product-information/current-key/001010.html

  • Neat idea. What strength magnets did you use?

  • The magnets I'm using came in a set from Sugru - they sell a mouldable silicone that has many uses in its own right.

They are neodymium magnets and are about the size of two stacked 1p coins.

  • Very clever.

  • Just read this thread. Huge thanks to all, esp. GA2G who has the patience of a saint. Had 3 beautiful bikes nicked in London, very aware of the heartbreak and frustration, many friends courier so I hear what goes on. Now looking at a fahg mini, a loud disc alarm, using edscoble style, and also some additional options.

Is there any opinion on the old OnGuard Brute Steel Mini (Black and Silver) that's still available? I'm in the U.S so can order it. The newer (?) Yellow and Black Mini is down as a secondary lock, but the old one seems to match the Fahg M. Is that right? I searched the site via google & couldn't find any clarity. Linkage:

Of course, if anyone could point me to a lock that has acid for blood and/or a surprise alien facehugger that would be ideal.

  • @AeroDynamik, the old style OnGuard Brute Mini is/was very good. I recommend it very highly. The new one is also as good (Brute), because the u-bar is 16.8mm on both locks. I prefer the old old because of the shape, and looks.

And both essentially match the Fagh Mini.

  • Thanks. I also saw this: inbike - 16mm, double bolted square style, hardened, small u lock. Lighter and cheaper (hmmm) than the fahg mini and obv ditch the useless cable.

  • It's available cheaper from that link without the cable. Just click the colour options button. Not sure why it says colour as they all look the same colour to me.

  • Nope, I wouldn't recommend that one at all. The base is too small. It would succumb to prise/lever or hammer attacks.

  • And the fourth picture should be in the How Not To Lock Your Bike thread!

  • Excellent, I didn't look at the images.

  • I know this is a SECONDARY LOCK but the Abus 401 Mini (the Gold rated one) is currently £36.57 from Halfords (Slight anomally in the desctiption about it being 'Insurance approved by Sold Secure to Silver level' although it also prominently mentions 'Gold' and '401' several times)

Posting it here as the Secondary Locks thread isn't as active and, well, if we're discussing Primary Locks then you may want a Secondary.

Big fan of this thread btw. My set-up that has survived London for many years:
    Abus X-Plus 54 230mm
Abus 401 Mini for quick stops & secure sheds
Kryptonite Evo Mini (now retired as prefer Abus 401)
    PitLocks (wheels, seatpost)
Solder in Allen bolt heads [stem, bar clamp, steerer clamp, seat clamp]

  • You've got it all sorted. :-D

Glad we on the forum helped keep your bike safe.

  • On the grease transfer front: I originally used grease for the locking mechanism, but my key would pick up the grease+dirt every time I locked/unlocked it, and so my hands and jeans pockets would get dirty. I now use graphite powder and have never had any issues with it going anywhere.

I can also confirm that the OnGuard Brute does need lubing, or it will lock your bike safely and securely against your will one cold winter day, and hold it ransom until you bring a lube sacrifice (happened to, eh, a friend of mine?).

  • @RogerO'Bicycle why do you prefer the yellow Abus 401 over the Evolution? I know the Abus one is a little thicker but it bugs me that it has no protection for the key slot.

  • @RogerO'Bicycle should have asked, as an owner of both the Abus 401 and Kryptonite Evolution Mini how do the sizes compare side by side ie is one internally wider/longer than the other? I have the Abus 401 and it's a bit small for my liking.

  • I like the Abus 401 because it'd require 2 cuts to defeat it. The Evo Mini has the 'bent foot' design.

I never used the keyhole protector on the Evo Mini actually. And the lock cover on an old massive (not spare she'd lock) NY Krypto broke quickly.

  • Ta. If you contact Kryptonite they send a replacement cover free. I replaced mine recently on an old New York recently won't be able to do it again easily though as the bolt heads were as soft as butter and are now destroyed.

  • Wiggle has the Aubs 401 mini as having a 16mm shackle. http://www.wiggle.co.uk/abus-u-mini-401-bike-lock/ Is that true or is it one of those where they're including the cover too? It doesn't seem to appear on the Abus website.

  • I can measure my yellow one, ie the Sold Secure gold rated one, when I get home tonight and report back.

  • Cheers, my local Bike Republic only had the silver rated one and that definitely wasn't 16mm shackle.

  • Guys I don't mean to be a wet blanket, but in the Secondary Locks thread, there is a lengthy discussion about these locks [Abus 401 and Krytonite Mini]. Honest.

  • :)

It's sold out at Halfords now anyway. It's an excellent secondary lock and has survived as a primary lock for me in and around London when needs must. When used on its own I think it says "sod off, don't even try" more loudly than the Evo Mini and it doesn't rattle.

Combined with the rest of my measures (Abus Plus 54 230mm, Pitlocks, solder) it's a good'n. I never. Ever. leave my bike out overnight.
