I read this whole thread last night after not reading it for six months, it's funny how my experience tallies with everyone else's. My 28mm Gravel Kings must have done nearly 4000 miles by now and they're still going strong, although the centre of the tread is pretty smooth it's not a problem. I've not had a single 'issue' with them that I can remember.
My Compass Bon Jon Passes were very good for a long time but I have had a few p-words recently after about 1400 miles. This seems to have been during the recent wet spell to be fair. While I haven't really had the @amey lack of grip problem I haven't really pushed them round corners in the wet much either. Can confirm that they're crap on slidey mud or grass but you'd expect that.
I'll carry on with them for the moment but am interested in bigger Gravel Kings as the 28mm ones have been so good and would be a chance to try tubeless finally. Can they actually be had in gumwall anywhere yet?
A pair of Vittoria Voyager in 35mm also seems like a no brainer given the price. What are they like for puncture resistance though? This suggests potentially not that great?
