  • I still have to punch my way out of bar fights in far off lands before rescuing precious artifacts and stealing the hearts of damsels in distress so I need sexeh arms. They're turning to moosh as I type...

  • being in the 94kg I wouldn't call myself a climber. 'one lap wonder' probably fits me more.
It's quite interesting to read about such different opinions and different riders. What other complimentary stuff people do? yoga/swimming/running?

  • I eat a bit of yoga. It's nice on fruit.

  • Talk of fasted turbos a few pages back. Am I doing it wrong if I get out of bed, do my trainerroad workout then have breakfast? It's only sweet spot base just now so an hour at medium intensity. I don't feel overly hungry or tired later or anything... The only reason I'm not eating is because I assume it wouldn't get to my legs in the 15 mins between eyes open and pedals turning.

Once I get to vo2 max intervals I suppose I should do them in the evening. Make sense?

  • This morning when I woke up I did 5x5 at 108% then 1x20 at 90%. I didnt eat breakfast. Had I eaten breakfast I would have just sicked it back up.
Just drink a carb drink during the workout. And maybe have a snack before bed.

If you can do it and you feel fine, keep doing it. Why change if it isn't broke.

  • Dawn turbot sessions are excellent for appetite surpression.

  • sweet spot base just now so an hour at medium intensity

It's what now? Base VO2 strength endurance hill repeat high cadence one-legged seated climbing sprints?

  • That sounds horrible, even fully fuelled. I used to do threshold stuff before breakfast and I always was shit. Only ever z2 now and I sometimes think it has energy repercussions the next day . But then I'm a wuss

  • Having a sourdough baking in the oven next to me this morning isn't doing my hunger pangs any good.

  • It's alright, strong carb drink is enough to keep me fuelled.
No worse than any at other time really.

  • Zero quad hyper Tabatas

  • Been trying this week some tempo laps on the TT bike - turns out Regents Park isn't a great place for this as every couple of minutes I become aware of someone sat on, who then feels duty bound to 'do a turn' in front.
Leave me alone to hit my numbers, I don't want to be in your gang.

  • I remember this from last year, it's frustrating. I would just move out of their slipstream to keep the power constant and also tell them you're trying to train. Some will leave you alone.

  • It's an interesting one and a situation which can and probably will happen to you at some point in a TT. This happened to me in my last 25; I caught my minute man and quickly made a ~5sec gap while keeping effort constant. He then slowly overtook on a downhill when I was conserving power, so when it flattened out again I had made the decision to FUCKING DROP HIM so he didn't mess up the remainder of my TT (which he would have, as a series of roundabouts were coming up)

  • Note: The actual 'dropping' of said rider was probably not as eventful as I made it out to be.

  • ^^Or just crush them

  • Having a sourdough baking in the oven next to me this morning isn't doing my hunger pangs any good.

I would imagine living next door to a bakery or patisierre could be a nightmare for anyone trying to keep trim.

There used to be a commercial one on Lambeth road, the waft was incredible whenever one cycled past in the morning.

  • Good practice for when you're racing a TT and the handicapping is a bit off.

    #crushthem

  • It's all part of the Regent's Park fun, inevitably 'their turn' is the one when you're going downhill and having a breather before the next effort. As mentioned elsewhere, the real solution is sod any structure, just drop them.

  • Surely a friendly 'suck my wheel' will get the message across? :)

  • Some cunt from the Hounslow Wheelers has done this to me twice - drafted me for 40 miles of a 50 and for a good period in a 100.

  • He was just wanted to see you in the flesh, like the rest of us.

  • I mean, he just wanted to be seen in your flesh, like the rest of us.

  • Or a sarcastic arse pat whilst cranking up the pace?

  • I posted a while back about noticing (since training on a smart trainer with heart rate) that when after having pegged my heart rate at what I'd have thought was max (185) my Garmin would spike to around 240 and sit there until I eased off. Tried another heart monitor and got the same result. Knew it couldn't really be sat at 240bpm and that something funny must be going on (I've sat for 30+ minutes on big climbs in that state...uncomfortable, but I figure riding up a big hill at 100% is going to be!)

Got worried about it, read all about Atrial Fibrilation, palpatations, missed beats, that Velonew heart article, and went to see my GP. Got referred to a cardiologist, who sent me for a treadmill test to get an ECG while in that state.

Finally had it done yesterday and it turns out that yes, it seems my max heart rate is 240bpm and other than being high, the cardiologist can't see anything out of the ordinary. Strong, regular, even beats that respond as expected to my level of effort. They didn't really have any advice, just to wait until I hear back from the consultant, but they don't think there is anything to be worried about. They said they may want to put two small montiors in me (surgically) that last two years and can be monitored remotely.

To be honest, the more I've read since this started (I haven't read The Haywire Heart yet, no time with studying) the more I'm thinking that riding to the level I would like, and was doing until a year or so ago, combined with a regular working and family life, and with the intention to carry on into old age, is just not a good idea from a health point of view. I'll see what the consultant says, but I may decline an offer of implanted heart monitors, as cool as they sound, and just retreat to steady commuting only.
