I've seen baggage handlers throwing bikes from the plane onto the tarmac. If you do this and it survives that's just insolent.
There's two schools of thought on flying with a bike;
Even if the handlers treat it well, bikes merely wrapped up in cling film can still fall from the loading conveyor belt from a great height = dead bike. I'm sticking with hard case in all situations I can work with it.
